NetComm.4.8 over 4.7x

Postby schrims » Fri 20 Feb, 2004 4:48 pm

Could there be a reason why i would want to change from NetComm.4.76 or 4.79 to 4.80? My 4.6 sometimes hangs while staying connected, i have to reboot to get it back. So, i thought maybe time to update my version. I can't stand AOL, so I didn't want to get a version too close to "them". Or is there really no relationship even though Netscape was bought out?? Thanx! :)

Someone should be along to tell you exactly why Netscape 4.80 might be better than earlier versions. They should also be able to tell you how to up grade. I still have Netscape 4.79 on most of my systems as a back-up browser. You can also do a search for "4.80" on this forum that finds several threads where this topic is discussed. I, personally, would upgrade to 4.79 or 4.80 if I was using an earlier version, especially if I had anything earlier than 4.70.

The best choice would be to leave the old Netscape 4.5X+ version on your system and upgrade to Mozilla 1.5 or 1.6. Versions 6/7 of Netscape were based on Mozilla. Netscape 4.XX will co-exist well with Mozilla. Mozilla will have no AOL content, but should pick up profile information from Netscape 4.5X or higher (as long as no profiles from Netscape 6/7 or Mozilla are found). Plaese check the system requirements before trying any of this and ask for any help here or in the Netscape/Mozilla forum.

Assuming that you want to stick to a 4.x version, I see no reason to go from 4.79 to 4.8, although I would recommend to go from 4.76. I had awful time with 4.76, and it was bad enough that went back to 4.75.
Don't worry, you will not get any Netscape which is close to AOL (although I am using now an experimental AOL derived, more or less from the same software as Netscape 7.0x). But count in getting a sprinkling of AOL junk, on your desktop, even though AOL has killed any further development of Netscape.
I suggest that you do not install a new version on top of the other. Uninstall from the Add/Remove, and then install the new version. Your plugins folder, and your profile will be preserved.
However, I don't know why your program hangs. It happens to almost anything, if you use Windows.
Profman suggestions are good, but don't blame us if you are having problems with the new Netscapes/Mozilla. They are different animals, and their files are of a different format as the 4.x files.
These are my opinions, and no more than that.

NetComm. 4.8 over 4.7x

Strictly from a novice, I recently converted from 4.79 to 4.80 and noted a minor improvement with absolutely no problems. If you are up for a little advanced user stuff, see the instructions for a clean install at http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/nscleaninstall.html and for installing without unwanted components such as AIM at http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns47xlite.html

Norman,
what kind of improvement did you see between 4.79 and 4.8? They have all the same from 4.77 to 4.8.

Netcomm.4.8 over 4.7x

Fulvio,
The improvement in 4.8 over 4.79 was was just such a minor little thing that I don't remember now exactly what it was, maybe something to do with plugins? The user interface appearance is unchanged. I thought one of you serious experts would know what changes if any were made by Netscape to justify assigning a new version number.

I got this very vague statement from ufaq.org:
The ongoing 4.7x work is being done by iPlanet to fix bugs demanded by corporate clients with whom iPlanet has support contracts. Netscape gets to release those versions to end users as a by-product of the iPlanet work.
4.8 is no longer handled by Netscape/AOL. There is nothing obvious, and it works. Definitely nothing that I can determine about plugins.

Netscape 4.x sucks....period.

It's like someone dresses up their site with modern STANDARDS and then Netscape 4 strips them away, screws up the page formatting, takes forever to load the site, then crashes :D

IE isn't much better  I like K-Meleon on old systems under 300mhz, it runs much better than Mozilla or Netscape 4.

I hear you, twice. Can you give an example? But, any 4.x are no longer able to handle the modern standards. That's why there has been a NS6.x and now up to 7.1. Some websites will not even let you in with 4.x, although the reverse is also true.
