Netscape 3.0

Postby hartlandcat » Sun 09 Feb, 2003 5:21 am

From my stats, I have found that around 2% of my visitors still use Netscape 3.0. Is this normal for that amount of people to be using a browser so old? Any ideas why they would be, and what I should do about it as my site uses features that do not work in Netscape 3.0.

Thanks! ^_^

You might want to check my Traffic Report, you will see the NS 3.x is about 2% as well.
For the features missed, you might want to check SillyDog701's Netscape Version Guide. It all depends on the your design of your website. In short, no Dynmaic HTML, no CSS, only JavaScript1.1... the best way is to test it yourself.

Woah! 3,646 people came to ur site with Netscape 2.0? Are people CRAZY?!?!?! Why on earth would people be using a browser that's so old? Well... I like to use dhtml on my site (actually, I want to put most of my pictures in slideshows ^_^) --is there any way I can persuade them to upgrade? I've already got signs that say 'best viewed with Netscape/IE 4.0+' though I *suggest* that Netscape would be better (I'm a huge Netscape fan ^_^) --actually, since I've started putting Netscape signs everywhere, there actually has been a sudden rise of Netscape users to my site ^_^ lol! It's about 12% from the about 7% it was before. ^_^

You could always use Javascripts to redirect these users to a page that will warn them that features on your site need IE/Navigator 4.0+ - then give them the option of continuing.

Server Side scripts for redirection or showing a message is preferred. (Simply users might have JavaScript switched off.)

It is recommended not to *force* visitors to upgrade their browsers, but suggest them to. A good approach is to tell them the benefits of using an up-to-date browser such as Netscape 7.01.

NS3.0 is terrible with javascript, but, believe it or not, some people have some old clunkers with Windows 3.1, and very little memory. For them, NS3.0 is the Cadillac. I received a test e-mail from a friend, whose hobby is to revive old PCs. Maybe the upsurge is his fault. Kidding aside, he tells his "customers" (friends and family) that he will not guarantee the latest on the Internet.

Yeah... but no-one has ever come to my site using Windows 3.x --The regular Netscape 3.0 users must be using Windows 95. Netscape 6.0 and IE 5.5 work fine on Windows 95, right? ^_^

There are, also, people who don't change, and use what they had, for years.
IE 5.5 works in Win95, while Netscape 6.0 never worked anywhere ( I "used" it with Win95, and, for two weeks, Netscape almost lost me).

Hi,
There are a lot of people that still use netscape 0,1,2,and 3x.
So it might be correct.
Thank You.
