netscape 4.03 problems

Postby c1sissy » Wed 15 Sep, 2004 4:47 pm

I have windows xp pro, and I installed ns 4.03 a few months ago for viewing web pages that I work on. I tried to start it up and it won't work. Also I tried to uninstall, however I can't seem to get this to uninstall at all. Tried to reinstall over it, but I keep getting a warning telling me that I can't install this on my machine.

Any help would be greatly apprecaited!
Thanks in advance!

I am sure that you have done some search on the compatibility of any old program in WinXP. You know that several programs will not work at all, although it is possible to use the compatibility tab. I access 4.8 in WinXP, I have set my NS4.8 compatibility to Win98. 4.03 is so much older that you may want tto use Compatibility for Win95. I may try to get 4.03, or some of the 4.0x, but I am not optimistic. I think that most NS users who have not made chances are using a 4.7x or 4.8.
I think that you should try a newer version first. But, I will see what I can do.

I did actually check around and thought that it was permissible to run this on win xp pro.

I don't understand why I can't uninstall this. I forget where I read the information but it did say to let it install. Guess it was bad advice? :?

Thanks for your response.

I installed 4.03, and opened it, but it announced, first a number of javascript errors. Then, I tried a number of website, including this one. All of them loaded only partially. When I first opened 4.02 it asked me to create a new profile, then I installed it in a folder of its own. There was an item called Netscape Communicator(typical) in the Add/Remove, and I used that for the uninstall. I changed the compatibility to Win95, with luck at all.
So, I don't know if you tried to install 4.03 in the location of another Netscape, but the way I did it I was able to remove it. But, I think that I answered your question. 4.03 will not work.

P.S: I remove 4.03, but when I tried 4.8, it acted as if 4.03 had possessed it., in spite of the fact that I had used a different folder for 4.03. So, I had to remove 4.8, and tried to reinstall it. And, when I went to reinstall, it could not do it, because, allegedly, communicator was running. not sure where, but normalcy was restored for a minute after that. I tried to use 4.8 to post, but I could not enter more than one line.
Actually 4.8 is pretty decent. And, don't forget that Users folder is hiding like the NS7.x is hiding its Profiles. Learning something every day!

ok, I am going to look to see if I have communicator in here in the add remove.

Also I have the newer netscape that I use for normal browsing and viewing my homework pages etc.. in.

My pc is partitioned. What I did was install 4.03 in a folder on the f/ partition. What If I just deleted that folder and left it in the recycle bin to see what happens? Its actually no big deal if I can't remove it, but I would like to since its not functioning. Which I don't understand as it did for a while. Now it just loads and goes no where.

btw, I really appreciate the imput and the time that you have put into this! Thanks a lot!

It was unexpected, but I do not mind finding weirdnesses.
I installed 4.03 in my only partition, but installed in a folder other than the default. This worked in Win98, where I had as many as five Netscapeslower than 4.8. And, I got used to use a different profile for each. I don't understand my the add/remove did its job removing all but the usual file which are left behind, took over my 4.8, although 4.8 was left in the add/remove, and on the hard drive. Is this a WinXP problem?
I would say go ahead, delete 4.03. If you see that the Help|about Netscape gives you the correct version, I guess that it is the way to go.
I must have been seeing things, 4.03 had Users folder in its own folder, while 4.8 has in the default location. XP is a pain for this.

lol. I tend to cause many acts of "weirdness" within my computer. My poor nephew has had to bail me out a few times, though its been a totally long time since he has had to reformat. Its due for one, but only because its been a long time since the last one.

He tries sooo hard to teach me organization on here. And I start out good, I really do, but...... I'm better then when we first got the computer about 3+ years ago.

I just would have liked to see the pages I'm doing in nn's older versions. I know not too many people use them, but I guess all I need to really do is comment out the style sheet to see if the page makes sense instead of installing the older browsers.

I just went into the system files and deleted if from in there. Just took out anything that said NN4, took a deep breath restarted, and viola, pc is working fine. NN7.1 loads firefox does, and I still need to check mozilla, but I"m sure that one will be fine as well.

thanks again.
Take care!

You see how I feel about these things from my avatars!
Now, what does this mean: "NN7.1 loads firefox does"? I hope not.

lol, sorry, nn7.1 loads up when I start it as does the firefox browser. It also loads. Sorry I sort of mixed up sentences there a bit! In other words, all browsers are in full working order on my machine!

Great, now it is time to give up on 7.1, and get 7.2! Or, better Mozillaxx. See my thread about keeping both. Grrr!
This is in the other forum, about Netscape and Mozilla
