Netscape 4.7 helper application problem

Postby jrmarto » Fri 13 Jun, 2003 2:06 pm

Hi - new to this forum and hope you can help me. I have a friend who is using Netscape 4.7 on a Win 98 system. She is a bridge player, and there is a site that allows you to view your hands on-line as a "lin" file, using the helper application bbolin. The other day she mistakenly chose "save" instead of "open" while viewing one of these files and did not have the "ask me before" button checked. Now Netscape wants to save these files every time, and we cannot figure out how to revert the system to where it asks again. I have recreated the problem on my own computer and have tried to delete the bridge movie helper application and add it again correctly - this doesn't work. Is there a way I haven't seen to revert Netscape 4.7 to its original defaults for applications? I am really stymied here, and am pretty literate with computers, although I am not a Netscape user myself. My friend, however, is a little old lady who lives on the other side of the country from me so I will have to walk her through whatever the cure is click by painful click.

Thanks for your help,

Julie

I no longer use NS 4.7x, but I still have it installed on most of my systems. I investigated your problem and can present the information below for your consideration.

Consider this for NS 4.7x:

Click on Edit|Preferences|navigator(click on + to expand list)|Helper Applications

Find the helper application "bbolin" or the one that handles the file type "lin." Click on it. Click on the Edit button. You have some choices here. One is "Open it using the default application." Another is "Always ask me before handling files of this type." Choose your desired choice, click OK to close the dialogue box, and click OK to close Preferences.

Come back with any more info so that I or others might be able to help you out.

Profman - I have actually done that several times, in as many ways as I can think of, up to and including deleting the helper application and adding it again - no matter which way I try to edit it (or reinstall it) Netscape still wants to save the file, not open it or give me a choice. I am afraid that there is some registry change that might have been made, and I certainly don't want to try to edit my little old lady's registry via instant message!

Any other approach you might think of would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Julie

Julie,

What I'm about to suggest could muck things up, but it has worked for me, but still try this at your own risk.

First, back up all bookmarks, email etc

Uninstall Netscape 4.7.x

Go Start, Search and search for "NETSCAPE", delete all instances of Netscape.

Go Start, Run, "regedit" then search for all instances of Netscape, deleting all.

Reinstall Communicator 4, and create a fresh profile, then bring back the email and bookmarks etc..

This SHOULD work, but please take care when deleting files and deleting registry entries.

Julie,
In such cases I can become ruthless, like uninstalling NS, using theAdd/Remove from the Control Panel. That will remove registry items. It is easy to put it back in.
But, is this behavior associated with the profile? It is testable, because one can use a more or less common Plugins folder, and create a new profile, setting up all preferences.

Sigh. Well, creating a new profile didn't help at all, so it is not profile specific. I then uninstalled Netscape using add/remove programs and reinstalled it. I was pretty sure it wasn't going to work when on the first instance that I ran it it asked which of my existing profiles I wanted to use - I was right, the problem still existed, so uninstall using add/remove doesn't remove enough to get rid of this nagging problem. I am quite sure that Jarrad's solution of totally uninstalling Netscape and ridding the registry of all Netscape related items would work but that is just too drastic and risky for me to try with a little old lady's computer that I cannot put my hands on myself. So thank you all for your suggestions, I guess we will just have to live with this annoyance unless I can find a more simple solution.

Thanks - Julie
