Netscape 4.72 won't boot up anymore, maybe due to Firefox

Postby RetiredCritic » Sat 15 Oct, 2005 11:19 am

I am getting an error msg when booting up Netscape 4.72:
Netscape has caused an error in NETSCAPE.EXE. Netscape will now close.

When I look in the Netscape folders on my Windows ME C drive, I see a number of the files have my Firefox icon incorporated... which suggests that Firefox, my default browser, may have intruded upon or taken control of my Netscape functions.

Also, for the record, I just began using Mozilla Thunderbird for mail in the past several days.

I iniitally came to SillyDog today to download Netscape 4.72 again, in hopes of fixing the problem, because I have a number of important msgs and addresses I would like to retrieve. But for some reason, I wasn't able to access the download from the archives.

Any ideas on how best to proceed would be most appreciated. Thanks, all.

Correction: Netscape 4.72 Won't Boot Up Any More, NOT 7.2

Sorry about making a mistake first time using this forum. But I meant that I am having trouble with Netscape 4.72.

You may have a difficult problem. First take a look at Netscape.exe has caused an error in.... You may also go to Ramona's Netscape Solutions and download the index file for the location of her other Netscape 4 help links.

I would recommend that you try to uninstall the old 4.72 and then do a clean install of a fresh 4.xx version. Here are some good links for this:

Performing a "Clean" Install for Netscape Communicator 4.x

Cannot Uninstall Netscape Communicator

You are correct that the download of Netscape 4.72 here at SillyDog fails, and I will contact Antony, the SillyDog admin to try to fix this. If you are in a hurry, I would suggest that you download a higher version of the Netscape 4.7x series. The links to the other 4.7x versions seem to work. You could try 4.79 (my favorite), 4.80 (the last), or, if you really love your 4.72 version, try the 4.73 version, which is probably only a minor upgrade over 4.72.

I doubt (although I can not be sure) that Firefox or Thunderbird would cause any of your problems. Firefox, as your default browser, will be assigned to open several file types, including all HTML files.

Please post back with any details, comments, or solutions.

Netscape 4.72 wont boot up any more,

Postby RetiredCritic » Sat 15 Oct, 2005 5:10 pm

Thanks for the quick and indepth reply. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I just drove 3 hours to the country from Brooklyn. Before I check out the various links and options, could you please tell me if I am likely to lose the data stored in the current 4.72 ... which would defeat the purpose of the fix. If I can just install a version that would overwrite what is there with a compatible Netscape program that would restore function long enough for me to access the addresses and emails, et al, I would be very happy. Again, thanks for being there.

Joe G: Good question. I apologize for not addressing the important issue of making a backup.

You should backup your user data before trying anything, although there really is only a small possibility of losing that data. You might also want to backup the plugins directory.

Take a look at Ramona's:

Back up Users Profile Before Reinstall
Moving the Netscape Communicator Users Data From PC to PC.

You can try to install version 4.72 over an older 4.72 install, although it is better to go through the uninstall, clean install route. No user data should be lost when uninstalling, although you should, just in case, backup user data to a different location.

You need to be cautious if you also have Netscape 7.x around, since it installs itself under the same Netscape directory as 4.x, although they are separate programs. Netscape 7.x installs in the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape directory. I mention this because a Clean Install often directs you to delete the directory that Netscape 4.x is in, and this would have the effect of deleting any Netscape 7.x program.

EDIT: The download link for the Netscape 4.72 versions now works for me. Perhaps Antony fixed the link or it was a temporary problem.

Netscape 4.72 wont boot up anymore,

Thank you, profman

I will try from amongst the ideas you have suggested what seems easiest and safest, considering my skill level and personal confidence level.

You should know that, aside from other familial diversions, the latest delay in responding to you and finding time to experiment with solutions has been a 12 hour outage by Times Warner Cable in my area.

Ah, technology!
