Netscape 4.75 and Windows XP

Postby bobgroh » Tue 12 Dec, 2006 2:07 pm

Because of some antiquated web applications that my present employer uses, I need to use Netscape 4.75 (just for this one application thankfully). Netscape 4.75 will be loaded on a new-ish computer using Windows XP (fully up to latest upgrades). Are there any problems that I might have?

I know some older software applications do not load very cleanly on Windows XP. I do NOT intent on using NS 4.75 for anything other than this one web based application and will be retaining my regular browser (Firefox 2.0 and Thunderbird with IE 7 as backup) for everything else. Thanks.

The only issue I think you'd be likely to encounter with Netscape 4.75 will render most modern websites very poorly.
But, since you'll be using it for purposes other than regular internet browsing, it should not be a problem for you.
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061101 SeaMonkey/1.1b
SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

My recommendation is to download Netscape Communicator 4.80 (Base Install), it has improved Java and CSS support over 4.75. Unless you must use 4.75.

You can download Netscape Communicator from Netscape Browser Archive - Communicator section

Thanks for the information, gentleman. Unfortunately I am constrained (severely!) to using NS 4.75. Has something to do with ability to run the application (a time sheet program). Don't know why they don't revise it to run under Java or something a bit more universal but, hey, I'm just a grunt here.

Somehow I doubt that you must use 4.75, I believe 4.80 would run your special application as well. (I also guess Netscape Navigator 4.08 might do the job.) (That's based on my understanding of those HTML, JavaScript, CSS supports in those versions since I don't really know your application.)

If Navigator 4.08 does the job, you should have a bit less concern on installing Netscape 4.xx on your Windows XP, as it only register Navigator.
