Netscape 4.78 -> Thunderbird ?

Postby Sam7777 » Wed 17 Nov, 2010 3:50 pm

I use Firefox for browsing but still use Netscape 4.78 for Windows for email since 1999. I adore this email program because:

1 It is light and simple
2 Malware / viruses are geared towards the more popular email programs – a.k.a Microsoft made
3 The one feature I like is that I can just take the mail files (in / sent) from my office computer on my USB. When I overwrite the mail files on my home computer or laptop I am fully up to date – no synchronizing etc. Just plain and simple overwriting which takes minutes.

I used Netscape 4.78 though all the incarnations of Windows but I recently bought a laptop with Windows 7 – and then tragedy struck as I cannot install Netscape 4.78 in Windows 7

My request for help is:

1 What program do I use to transfer the Netscape 4.78 mail files to the Windows 7 laptop
2 Is there any email program which is compatible with Netscape 4.78 mail files (I can use the same files without using the import features)
3 Finally is there any email program which has the same feature of overwriting email files like Netscape 4.78. If so I will install that email program in all my computers

I imagine that Thunderbird may have these features but am unsure

Thanks for your help

I has been such a long time since I stopped using Netscape 4.8 (an update of your 4.78) in conjunction with other related programs that I am not sure if Thunderbird will offer an option to import data from NS 4.78. Anyway, I found this link from someone who was wondering is NS4.8 can be run in Windows 7, using XP mode.
Seamonkey is suite, like the older Mozilla, Netscape6/7 and Netscape 4.x, to some extent.
Although NS4.x uses different header Mail file from the later mentioned program (.snm vs. .msf), since Mail is in the files with no extension, like Inbox, Sent, etc., it should be possible to copy the Inbox, etc. of 4.78 in a Thunderbird profile, with Thunderbird closed. Thunderbird should create their own format of header file.
Just to be sure, I would make a copy of the 4.78 Inbox, rename it to e.g. Inbox4 to avoid overwriting. The renamed file can be safely copy/pasted in the TB profile. Look, also at the section in Local Mail. Everything else about importing the profile may or may not work with Thunderbird 3.x.

Netscape 4.x runs fine on Windows 7. The problem is that the installer is incompatible with Windows 7 64bit. You can install Netscape 4.x on a computer with an older OS then just copy the installed directory to the Win7 machine if you want to keep using it.

I'm still using NS 4.79 as my mail client also!

It's been a couple years since i last checked, but at that time TBird Would successfully import NS email.

The main reason I decided to stay with NS is I have 100,000 + emails sorted into numerous folders & at that time TBird required my NS folders to be subfolders of T Bird folders rather then their own main folders, & it added an extra step to filing.

Other then that, the import worked perfectly.

It all depends if you want the programs to "import", i.e. to have it do the entire operation with a single click, or, if you want to do the work yourself. Other that 100,000 e-mails of the past is incomprehensible to me, if you choose to do the work manually, it works much better, and you will not have to deal with subfolders, if you don't like that. For instance, if your Netscape has a folder called "Sillydog", and copy it, you can paste it in whichever account folder you have in Thunderbird. Then, when you open Thunderbird, you will find that folder.
Since I have no preference about the other folders, I have a mixtures of folders, other that Inbox, and subfolders of the Inbox, and subfolders of other folders, hierarchically, in an order of usage, etc. I have no qualms in deleting some old e-mails, if of little or no present interest, thus, keeping my accounts more manageable.

Thanks Fulvio, I wasn't aware of that. Will try one of these days.
