Netscape 4.78 & 4.79 question--rendering times

Postby Amy » Mon 05 Aug, 2002 1:59 pm

One of my colleagues and I have created a prototype of the system we're building for our client and are required to support Netscape 4.78 and 4.79.

We're running into problems with how long it's taking 4.78 and 4.79 to render our HTML pages--sometimes upwards of 3 minutes. Time tests in other browsers (IE 5.5 and Netscape 6.1 and 6.2) show pages loading in less than 3 seconds.

I'm wondering if anyone has encountered any of these issues before and what you did to solve them. The HTML we're using is very vanilla, and our stylesheet is also very basic--nothing in there that 4.78 and 4.79 don't recognize since when the page finishes loading, everything appears as it should.

The only thing I can think of is we're using quite a few spacer images to precisely space and line up elements in our tables, which may have something to do with the load time.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!
Amy

Would it be possible for us to view the source of any of this?

I was thinking that the site was full of pictures. Try to shrink up a bit.
Then, if it does not work can you send the pags for us to see if they do the same on our systems?

Would be happy to send you source code--in 3 files: HTML, CSS, js.

Let me know the best way to get you this information.

Thanks!

Try HTML for starters. I am not promising anything, though.

zip them into one file. and put it somewhere in your server, and tell us where you put it.

I got it, unzipped, and try first with 4.79. Download progress stop at about 50%. Eventually it locked up my computer. IE6 and NS6.2.3, with 6.2.3 looking a bit better. I had no time to do more.
