Netscape 4.79 question

Postby Anne » Mon 22 Nov, 2004 3:32 pm

I currently use (and like) Netscape 4.79 for e-mail. Two questions:
1. Although my default setting supposedly copies the e-mail I've received at the bottom of my response (as I wish it to), this doesn't work with all e-mails. Sometimes nothing appears, and I have to use control-A to copy and paste. I can always tell which e-mails I'll have to do that with, because their appearance is different--usually a sanserif font rather than the usual default font. Anything I can do to make all e-mails, rather than just some, appear in my response?
2. If I eventually surrender and switch to Outlook Express, could I import all my Netscape e-mail subdirectories (totally tens of thousands of e-mails) into Outlook Express so as to continue to be able to do searches through my entire e-mail history?
Thanks to anyone who can help with either.

As for your second question:
Yes, you can import e-mail directly from Netscape Communicator into Outlook Express. Just go to File -> Import -> Messages and click on Netscape Communicator.

But, I wouldn't reccomend using it. Why? First of all, it's just as bad as Internet Explorer is for the Internet. Second of all, I just started to see if this worked, and Outlook Express crashed on me.

firstly, check your "sorting"

And if you just want to quote some, you will need to delete unwanted portion by hand. No such feature in Netscape Messenger (4.xx)

Yes, that can be done, although I've never tried, but there are reports that Outlook Express can read Communicator's mail.

Netscape 4.79 "quoting" inconsistency

Postby Anne » Mon 22 Nov, 2004 10:21 pm

I didn't explain my problem well; I'll try again. It has to do with the quoting of the received message when one responds to it. Here's how I have set this: Settings: Edit; Preferences; Messages; Forwarding and replying to messages; By default, forward message: Quoted; Automatically quote the original message when replying; Then start my reply above the quoted text.
This works in responding to or forwarding about 80% of the e-mails I receive. However, when I reply to the remaining 20%, the message isn't quoted. I don't think it's a coincidence that that 20% look different (different font) from the 80%. Any way to get the "quoting" preference to work with ALL e-mails?

So, my guess is that those 20% of email were in HTML format, and the 80% were in plain text format.
From what you said, Communicator's mail could not quote HTML-ed email. I am not sure if this is true, since I haven't used Communicator Mail for age.

Have you considered Thunderbird?

I just tried and was successful in Importing the mail from a 4.8 account. I could have done the same with the subfolders. All imported mail was in the original format. But, if you have to do the deed be prepared in having to take OE by the hand. It was trying to import mail from a 4.03 account, and not finding it. I never had 4.03 in any of my computers. What an imagination!
