Netscape 7.0 Bookmarks

Postby k1gold » Fri 15 Nov, 2002 6:14 pm

I installed Netscape 7.0 from the CD. It won't remember bookmarks I install, if I exit Netscape and then turn it back on.
Code: Select all
Should I uninstall the program and start all over?  Also I was unable to transfer IE Favorites to Netscape, using either of the procedures in the Netscape Guide.

I don't know how these CDs behave, but I feel that you are a victim of bad profile. if any. I suppose that after you click on the desktop shortcut, that you are presented with a Profile Manager, and you have to select the name of your profile? What do you mean by "bookmarks what I install"? Are these bookmarks from somewhere else, or individual bookmarks which you added.
Netscape comes with Bookmarks which are of little use to you, and you can add more manually. Your IE favorites should be at the bottom of the list, and any newly added bookmark at the very bottom. What do you see when you click Bookmarks/Manage bookmarks?
But, in any event, the bookmarks are not part of your program, but rather of your profile, which shuld be recreated.

This is a reply to the reply to my posting on Netscape 7. Bookmarks. When ever I add a bookmark, it is installed so long as I do not exit Netscape. If I do exit and return, any bookmarks which I installed are gone.
As for profiles, when I initially used the Browser I didn't know anything about Profiles and was automatically assigned a default profile. Later I read about them and decided to create one under my name. In the process I lost all the mail and initial bookmarks, etc., which were in the default profile. I suspect my best course is to make a new "Clean" Install per the procedure I found in the Netscape Navigator Forum, although this procedure is not wholly clear, between Step One, Step Two. It's not clear whether I should perform both steps, as some items in each are redundant.

Ramona has the BEST info on a Clean Install and Custom Install of Netscape 7 at:

http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns67cleaninstall.html

http://home.att.net/~cherokee65/index5.html

Following these excellent instructions I installed NS7 on three systems, two Win98 and one Win2000.

Excuse my ignorance but I don't know how to connect to the WindowsBBS, Netscape Navigator Forum. (Still with my bookmarks problem). I have tried Step One of the "Clean" Install procedure for Netscape 7, but it didn't solve my problem. Before proceeding further, I need more info. about deleting the registry keys.

1.You did not lose your mail, etc from your default profile. It is still there. All you need to do is to find the profile, and copy the files from one to the other.
Yiou are making yourself a lot of work, which will frustrate and will not improve your situation.
You have Win98, so your files will be accessible from Windows Explorer in:C:\windows\application data\mozilla\profile\ your name or default\ xxxx.slt The xxxx is an alphanumeric assigned by Netscape. You will find bookmarks.html in the old, and, you can context(right)-click on the file and Copy, and open the equivalent folder in the new profile. You repeat this operation with the Mail/account name/Inbox , and then Sent.
From your replies, I gather that you had no Netscape 4.x nor 6.x.
In which case where did the bookmarks come from?

Fulvio is right about the profile info probably still being around.

As far as editing the registry goes, you do not want to do that unless you are fairly confident that you know what you are doing, AND you have backed up your registry files. Don't do it if you are uncertain. Find an expert who can help you out. That expert would probably not be me since I edit the registry very rarely, and its a bit complicated to explain such a risky job in a short note.

Ramona's site on Netscape Solutions might give you an overview of how to work with Netscape 4/6/7. You can find that page at:

http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/index6.html

But she does not discuss editing the registry of Windows there.

Bookmarks, again

Postby k1gold » Thu 28 Nov, 2002 4:38 pm

Thanks to assists from Fulvi and Proflman, I abandoned the idea of tampering with the registry. I established a new profile, and with it I automatically got my Imported IE Favorites; moved over my address book, and now can create new bookmarks which the program does retain. I'm still carefully examining moving my mail files to the new profile, but think I can do that.
I'm out of the woods, anyway. Thanks. 73

No idea why I ended up with a double post, with incorrect link, in both cases. So, I fixed the link in both. It is an excellent forum for all sort of Windows computer questions. I will have to go there.
