Netscape 7.0 Installed, but will not load any page.

Postby payday » Tue 29 Oct, 2002 10:34 pm

I have downloaded and installed Netscape 7.0 several times. Smooth
install complete with mail and bookmarks and old preferences. I can
send and receive e-mail.
When the home page or any other web page tries to load I get this message.

Alert! The document contains no data!

I would appreciate any help. I have Windows 98.
Thanks,
payday

How do you connect to the internet? You may need to setup settings for proxies or something similar. Check your ISP's website, they will have information on how to do this.

Thank you for the reply.
I am connected with cable modem. Another computer in the home is
using Netscape 6 without any problem. I had Netscape 6 about a year
ago and deleted it after using it a few months. I am currently using IE
and Opera. Netscape was always my favorite and I would really like to
get it to work. I don't know how to find out why the pages won't load.
I even tried Netscape 6 again and had the same problem.

Go to Edit|Preferences|Advanced|Proxies and make sure the proxy info is correct. Usually "Direct connection to the Internet" is the correct choice for an uncomplicated system. You may also go to Internet Options (found in Control Panel under Win98 and Win2000 or in IE under Tools) and look under the Connections tab to see what connection type is listed for IE (in my office system, the "LANS Settings" button reveals my company's proxy settings which NS7 must also use).

It is indeed strange that E-mail works but not the browser. It still is possible something (like a firewall) on your system is blocking full access to the internet. On my office system (Win2000), I've been told to go to Edit|Preferences|Privacy & Security|SSL and deselect the "Enable TLS" box to help communication out of our LAN.

If you installed NS7 over NS6 without uninstalling first, that can cause various problems. Even if you uninstall NS6/7, all the bookmarks and E-mail are left behind. You may wish to consider the Clean Install and Custom Install directions at:

http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns67cleaninstall.html

http://home.att.net/~cherokee65/index5.html

But there is no promise that this would solve your problem, especially if some piece of software is complicating matters.

Hi payday,

In addition to the advice from profman, you might also try naming your cookies.txt file to cookies.bak. See if that enables you to browse.

Also, do you have Sun Java installed?

If you used the same profile of NS6, then create a new Profile. Your profiles are still around after removing the program. Still, it is odd that you get mail, and cannot get to the Internet. If you choose to get a new profile, you will have to copy the key files from the old profile.

Thanks to everyone for all their help and input. To the mad scientist especially, the problem was with the proxy setting. It took me a while to figure it out because the proxy prompt was hidden in the advanced tab. I had to double click Advanced for it to appear, but once I did the proxy prompt appeared and I was able to change it to direct connect and that solved the problem. Thank You!!!!! Thank You!!!!!

I cannot blame you for being lost. NS7, and, formerly NS6, are so different from NS4.x that it is a chore to find what is where, if there at all. One good tactic is to to look at every single item, not to make changes, but, most to familiarize yourself with the layout. One was used to have the filters, under Edit. Not now they are under Tools, and the new Phoenix has moved Preferences under Tools. It is, always, a learning experience.

Glad we could help you out. (I'll have to remember to tell people to double-click at the right places.) NS7 is a really great browser. Enjoy.

BTW, a mad chemist is also a mad scientist, so no problem with either title.
