Netscape 7.0 (Transfer Inbox and subfolders to a new pc)?

Postby ShaunaTech » Thu 19 Dec, 2002 10:04 am

I'm putting together a new laptop for a user. He uses Netscape 7.0 for his email, and I need to transfer 2 accounts (Inbox and personal folders) to his new latop. Is there an "easy" way to do this?
His old laptop is running Windows 2000, and his new one is XP.

Thanks!

To move the Mail files to the new location:

With Netscape closed, open Windows Explorer:
Copy the files with no .msf extensions in the Communicator 4.x or Netscape 6.x Mail folder (Inbox, Templates, Drafts, etc.)
Paste the files with no extension in the new Mail folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\accountname
NOTE: These files are hidden by default

Caution: they will replace any existing files in the new Mail folder.
You may first want to rename the Communicator 4.x or Netscape 6.x Mail files, e.g., change Inbox to OldInbox, etc. The renamed files will appear in the Netscape 7.0 Mail. This will ensure that you lose no existing mail.

Back up all Mail Folders before doing this edit. Better safe than sorry!

I want to add that since the folders are hidden, it will necessary to unhide them. And that mail in the old files will be there, but it can be moved to the active ones.

I have a similar problem but I am not familliar with the terms used in this reply. Could you please explain which files are hidden and how to unhide them ?
My mail consists of several sub-folders some of which have sub-folders themselves. Do I have to create some similar folders before I try to copy the mail folders or are the folders created automatically?
I need a very simple blow by blow description of what to do, I do not have a lot of computer knowledge.

Toby,
everything will be done automatically by Netscape, but there is going to be a major problem with WinXP to which you are going. I suppose that Uncle Bill (Gates) was concerned that people would make a wholesale mess of the Windows files, so, for your protection, all the files and folders which you can see in Win 98( although there are warnings in Win 98) are hidden from view and from search. Would not be for NS6/7 you would not know they existed. I do not have WinXP, but I have an excellent link
http://www.astalavista.com/library/os/w ... Drives.txt
which explain everything, and you will see all sort of stuff appearing. You will want to follow the path given by Ramona. I hope that this works.
