Netscape 7.0 Troubles

Postby abright52 » Fri 08 Nov, 2002 12:47 am

I currently have Netscape 7.0 installed on my XP Pro SP1 system. I have had a few problem with it.

1. For no apparant reason, Netscape with shut itself down. I cannot find any reason that this happens or a pattern to it. I can be looking at a page that is fully loaded and Netscape will just disappear as I am reading the page. No warning or reason. It is REALLY frustrating, I have reinstalled once and that did not help. I am tired of losing everything that I am working on, and starting from scratch!

2. I have multiple email accounts setup, one is mine, one is my girlfriend's account. They are both IMAP accounts and have the same SMTP address, yet sometimes when my girlfriend tries to send mail, she gets a message that the SMTP server is not configured properly or something like that. Yet, I can go to my account and it will send perfectly fine. The only way that I have found to fix this is to delete the account and add it again. It will be fine for a little while, then it will go out again.

Any ideas?

1. I have never seen this happen; could you elaborate on it like you would in a bug report?

2. This is very unlikely to be a client-side problem. I would suggest you use two different profiles to avoid any problems, but this shouldn't be happening on one anyway. I, for example, have a number of IMAP addresses with the same SMTP, and it works fine.

1. There is not really anything to elaborate on. Netscape simply closes/crashes. I get no error messages and I just have to restart Netscape and everything is fine until it decides to close itself again. If you have any specific questions that would help, I will answer them to the best of my ability.

2. I know it shouldn't be happening, I don't understand it. It never happened in PR1, I used that for quite a while and never had a problem with that.

I think that I reinstalled before I installed SP1, should I try to uninstall and then reinstall fresh?

I have Netscape 7.0 installed on WinXP SP1 in two machines, I don't have such problems at all. When does Netscape shut itself down? OR any particular pages? OR after you launch another programmes?

Have you configured your girlfriend's outgoing server? (under Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings | (select your girlfriend's account) | Advaced... button)

1. There is not really any specific time that it will shut down. Sometimes I will click on a link, some times I will scroll down a page, and as I said before it has happened when I was reading a page that was fully loaded and I was not scrolling or clicking on anything. There is just no pattern to it at all. I work on computers every day of my life and it is one of the strangest things that I have seen.

2. Yep, that is configured properly. I just don't understand why it will work sometimes and other times it will not. Her account doesn't get used nearly as much as mine, so it is hard for me to tell when it first happens.

Hi abright52

I'm also using WinXP SP1, but fortunately not experiencing your problem. With NO errors issued, one could consider a hardware issue. But generally does not restricted itself to just one program. Now this is a stretch, but if you have a 2nd keyboard available, swap it in. I'm curious if your current keyboard is issuing a rogue Ctrl Q request.
Another suggestion...
Open N7 to a blank page with Mail NOT open. Walk away from the computer and check it every 10-15 minutes. Does the program auto close. If yes, retry and see if a repetitive time value is duplicated.
If N7 does NOT auto-close, open mail, CLOSE all other N7 windows. Set mail to check for messages every 5 minutes... and repeat the same time frequency checks. Hopefully this will tell us which side of N7 is causing the problem and if URL location should be considered.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Dennis

Was reading at another forum of simular problems with N7 auto-closing. They tracked it down to a corrupt Java install. Uninstall Java and reinstall a FRESH downloaded copy.

I decided to try a new profile and see if that changes anything. If that does not take care of the problem, I will try to reinstall Java. I will keep everyone updated as to what happens.

Anything else?

Postby abright52 » Thu 14 Nov, 2002 12:48 am

I tried a new profile, that didn't work.
Then I uninstalled Java, downloaded a fresh copy and installed it, that didn't work either.

Any other suggestions?

Did the suggestions above shed light on the problem?
Also clear your memory and disk Cache's. What KB value do you have them set at?

It doesn't seem to be anything with Mail, Netscape will shutdown whether it is open or closed. I left it on a blank screen for a couple hours and nothing happened there.
I don't remember what KB values the memory and disk cache are set to, but they should be the default values. I am at work right now, so I will check later. I have tried to clear both of those, though.
I will try to do some more testing on it today and see what happens. Is there any kind of log that keeps track of when the program crashes?

re: Netscape 7.0 Troubles

Postby Animalart » Mon 18 Nov, 2002 6:24 am

Hi,

I've had this same problem. Netscape crashes ... well just disappears.
No warning. Nothing.

I have noticed it happens most often when I have either clicked
on a link, either to go back, or say submit a bid on Ebay.

Right clicking to save an image ... and the other day when I hit
the space key while typing an email.

It's getting VERY annoying and I may just dump Netscape.
Although a loyal user from the beginning. :/

I wouldn't want to use Explorer though :/

Also the new Composer leaves odd lines and dots next to image
links :/

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Help?

Problem still persists here. My plan, when I get some time, is to back up my profile, my bookmarks, etc and uninstall and do a completely fresh install. Nothing else that I have tried seems to work. I have used Netscape from the beginning, if nothing seems to work, I guess I could try Mozilla and see if I experience the same problems. I will never switch to IE. It is bad enough that every computer at my University only has IE on it. Could always go back to Netscape 4.7.....

Hi :]

I thought of going back to 4.7 as well ... but am afraid it won't work
with XP ... which I didn't want, but am now use to :/

IE is so open to viruses ... and I have fought it all these years ...

I bought Netscape and received the CD and book. First time I didn't
download it free ... figured it'd be okay since it wasn't a beta.

I did a search to see if they'd put out a patch for this problem ... and
haven't located any.

It's so frustrating :(

4.7 does work on XP, I already have it installed. I just switched to 7.0 because I like the new features and the ability to have more than one mail account.
