A quick paste from the IRC discussion

Yes, I ask questions. Stripped log from #mozillazine (aka excluding what was said that didn't apply to the conversation) follows:

<Hendikins> they released 7.01?
<doron> yes
<Hendikins> same bits as they leaked?
<dveditz> Hendikins: almost, minor change in the Viewpoint installer on windows
<Hendikins> dveditz: so my CCK'd build that doesn't have the viewpoint installer won't need a respin?
<dveditz> Hendikins: yeah, you dont' need a respin
<dveditz> Hendikins: you can download and check the build date if you like -- it's the same build
<Hendikins> dveditz: I was curious, it's not like I'm actually going to use the thing... and on 28.8k, I'm in no hurry to refetch 45MB of files to verify it. That can wait til I can attack a cable connection :)
<Hendikins> dveditz: did they ship 7.01 final/Linux without Java?
<dveditz> Hendikins: yeah
<dveditz> Hendikins: Sun announced a security hole in 1.3, we didn't have time to certify the new 1.4.1, and we knew of too many bugs in 1.4.0 (which is why Linux 7.0 had 1.3 in the first place)
<dveditz> Hendikins: I've been trying to convince them to release a no-crap version, almost got it in 7.01 but inertia and fear killed it
<Hendikins> dveditz: 7.01/Linux almost is a nocrap version
<dveditz> windows always had more crap
<Hendikins> dveditz: I'm painfully aware of this fact :/
<dveditz> Hendikins: so are we :-(
<Hendikins> dveditz: the popularity of the CCK'd packages is worrying to say the least (because the first thing that's done is usually to make it a nocrap build)
<dveditz> exactly -- that's what I keep trying to point out
<dveditz> (to mgmt)
<doron> Hendikins: we don't care, we want distribution
<dveditz> doron: that's not entirely true -- given the choice we'd like countable download numbers
<dveditz> doron: given the choice we'd like people to say "Netscape -- yeah cool" rather than "Netscape, pretty great, but larded with crap so get it from here instead"
<doron> dveditz: true, but our download counting seems flawed
<dveditz> doron: but from a mozillian perspective, the more clients out there the better
<doron> right

Of course, I have to go out now... :)

There is a short review of Netscape 7.01 iin MacCentral by Peter Cohen.

Netscape update adds features, improves security by Peter Cohen (MacCentral)
...

Changes in Netscape 7.01 include popup window controls; a home page group feature; new AOL Mail features; and COPPA compliance with improved security, which also offers greater control of certificates.

Netscape 7.0.1 requires a PowerPC 604e/266MHz or faster processor, Mac OS 8.6 or higher, and 72MB hard drive space. Separate downloads are available for Mac OS X and "Classic" Mac OS.

To all users of Netscape 7.01, can you inform the group about your experience with this new version so far.

Thanks!

I have posted before you did, and there is a thread to my original "problems with 7.01".
Briefly, the problems were in Mail and News, where I could not open any message. Browsing was ok. I was using the Prefbar for Popup blocking, and never had a problem. The blocker in 7.01 does not block Popups at the Netscape website, and other people said that it is erratic. So I went back to the Prefbar.
As for the Mail, there would have been no problem, if you used the Modern skin. I was using the Skypilot skin, and it, along with several others which worked in 7.0, did not work in 7.01. Within hours, a new and even better skin for Skypilot came out.

Fulvio... Did you click on "exceptions" next to the "suppress popups" button? If not that could have been your problem with the popups. They left about 15 sites to allow popups, once I deleted all of them it has worked fine for me.

What is new in Netscape 7.01?

Postby Antony » Wed 18 Dec, 2002 1:13 am

Copied from Netscape's FAQ
What is new in Netscape 7.01?

Netscape 7.01 offers a set of new features as well as minor stability and performance enhancements. These new features include optional Popup Controls that can be set within Preferences. Also, it adds the ability to view several tabbed pages as your home page experience. In addition, Netscape 7.01 offers enhancements to mail for AOL members who use the application to manage their mail, including the ability to unsend, check status and mark mail as unread. This release also has increased control in managing certificates. If a web site displays a certificate from a certificate authority you don't know, you now have the opportunity to accept or reject the certificate.

I placed 7.01 in separate directory (for just in case.........). With Sky Pilot and Prefbar (I use it because of history buttons) everything is running smoooothly and very, very quick. I experienced no problem with pop-ups (sound, notifications), including Netscape home page.

Gregor,
Thanks for reporting.
I removed Netscape 7.0 before I installed NS 7.01.

It is always better to uninstall previous version, before installing new version.

But, there are always some people who like to do installation over old version and try their luck. And sometime, they are lucky.
