Netscape 7.01 Upgrade

Postby JoeBtflsk » Mon 19 Jul, 2004 10:53 pm

I use Netscape 7.02 with Mac PPC, OS 9.2.2. Should I upgrade to Netscape 7.1 or wait for 7.2 ? Are those later versions limited to use with Mac OS X or will 7.1 work with my OS9.2.2 ?

Hello JoeBtflsk,

Unfortunately, Netscape 7.1 and the upcoming Netscape 7.2 release have only been developed for Mac OS X, so Netscape 7.02 is the latest version a Mac OS 9.2.2 user is capable of running.

Although Netscape 7.02 is still arguably a viable browser for Mac OS 8/9 users to use, if you are interested in a slightly newer browser you could consider trying Mozilla 1.2.1 or 1.3.1 instead. Mozilla is just the same as Netscape 7, minus proprietary features such as an integrated instant messanger and synchronization with Netscape Webmail, and continued to be developed for Mac OS 8/9 for several versions after Mozilla 1.0.1 (the basis for Netscape 7.02) was released, although the newest versions, like Netscape, are only available for Mac OS X.

I have always been curious about these things, which are in the category of chicken/egg. I mean is the OS capable of just so much that programs cannot be developed under these conditions? And, having experienced inability to upgrade a certain program in Win 98, but found that it was working for Win XP, I have become convinced that the OS is "fault". Programs developed for more advanced OS would have to be done over, specifically for the OS, and they won't. This is a main reason why I had been staying away from Macs.

In addition to what Andrew T. said, Mozilla was able to compile for OS9.2 up until Moz1.3.1, but a 1.3.1 build was never created and is not located on Mozilla's website. There is an unofficial build of Moz1.3.1 you can find at www.t3.rim.or.jp/~harunaga/mozilla-macos9/ if you don't mind using a build that wasn't compiled by Mozilla. If you do, 1.2.1 is still available on the Mozilla download page.
