Netscape 7.1 Email backup

Postby st857 » Sat 10 Feb, 2007 2:18 pm

I use Netscape 7.1 for my business email. This morning the browser stopped opening. I am affraid to mess with it because I don't want to lose these emails. I need to either:
A: Fix Netscape so it will work again.
B: Locate and copy email files.
C: Move these email to outlook
They must be somewhere but I cannot locate them

Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum, st857!

Take a look at this page, for the "Installer Bug" fix: Netscape Won't Start - Nothing Happens! If this doesn't solver your problem please post back.

Ramona I am glad you are still with the forum. I went to the site you suggested and some of the things they say to do I fear will cause me to lose my old emails forever. Idont have a profiles folder and in the past when netscape crashed and I reinstalled I lost my bookmarks. Is there a simple way for me to set up email in Netscape 8.1 and just import the old email? or find the file and back it up?

Thank you.

8.1 does not have e-mail.
As for, really, losing anything, you will need to crash the hard drive, and wipe everything off it. You did not lose anything more than the link to the Profile, and sometimes a new profile, followed by copying/pasting the files will fix everything. You want to rename the old Inbox, so that it will not overwrite the new one.
As for moving to Outlook there is no direct way. You must have your mail in a NS4.x. I don't have Outlook, so I don't know if it can be done directly, or it is necessary to go to Outlook Express.

the more help I get the more confused I get. Inside the profiles section I found what I think is my mail at
documents&settings/steven/applicationdata/mozilla/profiles/ steve/gs7ep91f.slt/mail

if I save this and reinstall Netscape then copy this back into new file will that work?

Thanks.

I. personally, never resorted at complete copying of the Mail folder, without having set up my mail, after creating a new profile. Then, I would go the old mail folder|account, and rename the Inbox, to let's say Oldinbox. If I copy Oldinbox, and paste it in the new .slt|Mail|account
I end up with an Inbox, and Oldinbox files. Each file will open in your 7.1, separately (you will get two folders). I am adding another link from Ramona's website as an aid.

ST,
it is daunting if you have never done it, but it works, unless you wipe out your hard drive.
Good luck if you plan to go to Outlook.

Steve,

You will need to create a Backup folder, then copy the entire Profiles folder to the newly created Backup folder.

Do the recommended fix on the Solutions page:

Back up your Profiles Folder(s)
Back up your Plugins Folder(s)
Using the Add/Remove applet:
Uninstall Netscape 7.1
Uninstall Mozilla 1.4 (if installed)

Delete the following folders:
~\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\
~\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE
~\Program Files\mozilla.org\ (if you unzipped, or installed Mozilla)

Clear the C:\WINDOWS\temp folder

Mozilla Only:
If you installed Mozilla from the SEA, then the GRE folder will be located here:
~\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org
If you installed Mozilla using the ZIP method then the GRE files are located here:
~\Program Files\mozilla.org

Reboot your PC

Reinstall Netscape 7.1

NOTE: This may happen again, but at least you have a fix for the problem.
