Postby Bullet100t » Mon 29 May, 2006 10:01 am

Hello all!
I had problems with my old Netscape 7.1, it had been work fine then yesterday it would not load, I tried it several differnt ways and it would not open at all. I went through Sillydog via Internet Explorer, which I don't like IE and I download Netscape 7.1 streaamline, I now have Netscape running but all of my bookmarks are gone. How can I get them back. There was no way to back Netscape up because it would not boot up to Netscape.
Your help would be appricated.
Thanks
Mark

Mark,

Do a "Find" for the Bookmarks file: bookmarks.html. You will find a small file in the new install of Netscape 7.2 Streamline, and hopefully the original Bookmarks file. The bookmarks.html file is located here:
[tt]C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt[/tt]

You can always backup your Profiles folder by closing Netscape, and opening Windows Explorer. Navigate to:
[tt]C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles[/tt]. Copy the Profiles folder, and paste it into your backup folder. If you have no backup folder, then create one, e.g., C:\Netscape Backup.

Let us know if you find the original bookmarks.html file. If you do, then copy the file, and paste it into the *.slt folder, replacing the existing folder.

In fact, be it Netscape7.1, or 7.2, Mozilla, or any related program, backups, and recovery of old files must be done with the program closed. And, beware that the Profile folders are hidden, by default, so a Search would not turn anything up, unless the folders are unhidden.
To see hidden files:
1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
2. Click the View tab
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files."
5. Click OK.
