Netscape 7.2 can not handle file type

Postby WalterBern » Wed 08 Sep, 2004 11:15 pm

MSN Money provides Internet stockquotes using http://moneycentral.msn.com/scripts/web ... Symbol=XXX where XXX is stocksymbol. It works with Netscape 4.8 and IE. However, it does not work with Netscape 7.2 which only provides error message:
"the file webquote.dll is of type application/x-msdownload and Netscape does not know how to handle this type of file. This file is located at http://moneycentral.msn.com/scripts/"

It does not help to select having Netscape open the dll with the application nor to save the dll to Windows/System. How can I fix this?

Mozilla ActiveX control and plugin support "npmozax.dll" is installed

Help would be appreciated

It is impossible to repeat this, since I don't have access to Money, but if I understand correctly you need to have that .dll file downloaded, and possibly entered in the plugins folder. The message you get means that you download the file. since things work with the other browsers, is the file in the NS4.8 plugin folder?
I have Money, but I don't use it.

Netscape 7.2can not handle file type

Postby WalterBern » Thu 09 Sep, 2004 10:24 am

Thanks for your prompt response. My inquiry does not relate to the MS Money application program which I don't own-but to the moneycentral.msn.com website. If you enter:

http://moneycentral.msn.com/scripts/web ... &Symbol=GE

on your browser you should get the stockquotation of General Electric because "GE" at the end of the above string is the stock symbol for GE.

Instead, when using Netscape 7.2 I only get the error message as I previously described. My Netscape 4.8 and IE browsers provide the correct result, the stock quote. The webquote.dll file was not in the Netscape 4.8 plugins nor according to my file search anywhere in my computer. (I use Windows ME).

I would appreciate any further advice. Thanks.

Normally you see this problem when the server is misconfigured so that it misidentifies the data it's sending. But as far as I can tell the server is identifying the page correctly as "text/html". It rather seems as if Netscape is getting concerned when it sees the ".dll" in the server file name. I'm almost ready to call this a Netscape bug.

The good-ish news is, when I try a moneycentral stock quote I too get the download dialog, but only once. Just cancel and repeat the attempt. It works fine from then on, until you quit and relaunch. (I'm using Firefox, but I'd expect Netscape to behave the same.)

I am not into stock, but I know a few names, so I used the original link, and I got my quotes, with no error. I, even, went deeper, using all three options. I also tried the GE link, and there was no problem.
Could this be due to Cookie handling? I gave up, long ago with any restriction, and I get one money.msn.com item in my cookie list. Not bad, considering that some website dump up to twenty, and they still don't work.

I had the same results with Netscape 7.2 First the download dialog, cancel, and the second try was successful. However, in Mozilla 1.7.2, canceling does not work, and I was unable to connect. The download dialog just repeats itself over and over? That's rather strange considering that 7.2 and 1.7.2 share the same code.

Using Firefox 1.0 PR here, and the quote page comes up just fine.

Netscape 7.2 cannot handle file types

Postby WalterBern » Thu 09 Sep, 2004 9:10 pm

Thankyou all for your helpful comments. Unfortunately I jumped from the frying pan into the fire. I botched up my Netscape 7.2 so that I get a very wide grey border at the bottom with "<menuitem" in red letters. Also some items on the browser screen area bit jumpy.

It resulted apparently either from my having requested Netscape to open that "webquote.dll" or from trying to install an ieview" plugin (http://ieview.mozdev.org). Reinstalling Netscape 7.2 (while retaining my profile) did not help.

I would greatly appreciate any advice on how I can get out of the mess I made. I suppose that I have to dump my Profile that I have spent years in building up. I would save my bookmark and the cookies files, but don't know how to save the password manager files nor of what else I need to save.

So thanks again for the information you have already provided. Obviously I would be greatful for advice on getting Netscape7.2 (or Mozilla1.7.2 ?) to work properly.

Walter,

In your situation, I would uninstall Netscape 7.2, and create a new Profile, (what you hoped you wouldn't hear).

Uninstall 7.2 via Add/Remove, and then Reboot your PC.
Check the GRE folder to ensure that Netscape 7.2 is completely uninstalled, if this file is in the GRE folder (shouldn't be) then delete the file:
[tt]C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.7.2_2004080415[/tt]
Also delete the [tt]C:\Program Files\Netscape[/tt] folder
(Assuming you have no other Netscape Versions installed.)

You won't lose any information in your Profile, but it will require some copy/paste. See this guideline I have for creating a new Profile, and I hope it makes the job a bit easier:
Create a New Profile.

I checked out the GE link above in both Mozilla 1.7.2 and Netscape 7.2. The page seemed to work normally in Mozilla 1.7.2.

The results using Netscape 7.2 were the same as WalterBern initially reported. What I then did was to continue to try to get Netscape to open the webquote.dll, although, unfortunately, I think I was selecting Mozilla by mistake. Anytime a dialogue would come up I would choose Mozilla to open webquote.dll. Eventually Netscape 7.2 worked OK on the GE link.

I then searched my hard drive for webquote.dll and found it in a temporary directory on my C drive. I saved a copy in a directory on my E drive. After I exited the two browsers, webquote.dll is nowhere to be found on my C drive, but both browsers still open the GE link just fine. There are no new plugin files for either browser and no obvious changes to the Chrome directories (the latter has caused, on one of my systems, the type of display problems that WalterBern is now experiencing).

This is very strange, because I have had no problem at all, and I don't have any webquote.dll file.

Again thanks to all-including the interesting comments of Profman. However, extra special thanks to you Ramona. Without your input I would never have been able to reinstall Netscape 7.2 with my original configuration. I've learned a lot reading your "Netscape....Solutions". Bless you for your help. Walter

It seems that you have run into the Sending error glitch. I contacted Antony, earlier today. I will delete the duplicate post. Today, I have been ignoring the Error, because it has occurred with every post.
