In answer to Fulvio's GRE issues . . . is there anyway around this, so the GRE on a customised build, cannot overwrite the GRE from the official version of Netscape 7.2, and/or any existing installation of Mozilla 1.7.2?

I have both Mozilla 1.7.2 and Netscape 7.2 installed with no problems evident yet. Mozilla 1.7.2 uses the GRE directory "1.7.2_2004080302" while Netscape 7.2 uses the GRE directory "1.7.2_2004080415."

The only issue was Netscape 7.2 kept trying to steal the default browser status. Windows XP has the "Set Program Access and Defaults" setting which cured this problem.

what I try, even if the relevant guidelines are followed to the letter, I always seem to get this . . .

I have two extra items in the Help menu of my experimental build of Compact. It works flawlessly. Where did you apply the changes? I'm not familiar with that non-disclosure PDF, so I don't know where you altered the settings.

I also do not experience any Classic problems. Did you change anything regarding the internal version numbering? Themes will be a problem, if you did.

Ok. I did not say overwrite. I said that your built took over 7.2. I had been able to have as many as three different builds at once of earlier programs. There was no such choice for 7.1, but I was able to use other builds for comparison. Each installed in a different folder, and with different profile.
I could not read the alert which I got while DJGM's build was being installed, but it made some reference to other files. Whatever they were, I could not use the original version. If DJGM's version has a different GRE folder from the other Netscape, I don't understand my problem, but if the same GRE folder is used, then I can see problems.
I would not expect problems with Moz1.7.2, because it has a different GRE. I have been using both Moz1.7.2 and NS7.2.
so, I don't know what your build did, but it made it impossible to use two 7.2s. Is anyone else using only DJGM's build, or figured out a way to work together.
Another point: I made 7.2 default, since it asked me. 7.2 was already default, and DJGM's removed that information. Finally, after saying yes to the default question, I found that like all Mozilla and Netscape program it checked all items in Prefs|Advanced|System.
Probably there is not much which can be done, with a new build, but if I ever would asked for anything is for the new build stop checking the image files. Netscape is not an Image p[rogram! and it makes a mess of that class of file handling.
Otherwise, I do not want to replace a well tested 7.2 with a beta, even though it appeared to be excellent in the short time I had it.

Profman,
the customized DJGM did something, so that my original 7.2 did not work any more. and 7.2 was "installed" also in my NS7.1. In each case the path was correct. All three were in different directories, and had the correct profile. I restored peace only after complete uninstalling.
As for the hijacking. This has been going on since 7.0 came out, and Mozilla was exchanging the favor. I will have to see if it is worthwhile to make changes. I have been using custom settings in a XP, which would be useless since Netscape7.2 and Mozilla1.7.2 are playing their tricks behing the scenes. Also, the mail settings do not include 7.2.

DJGM, tried sending you a private message, alas, didn't seem to work, got a "FAILED SENDING..." repeatedly.

That's OK, the message came through to me fine . . . thress times! It's been happening when
posting messages on the forums as well. Maybe there's a problem with the forum software.

I noticed the problem, and the mail notification seems to be down.

The "Netscape 7.2 Xtreme Edition - customised by DJGM.co.uk - Preview Release"
is now available for download. Here's what's included in this latest preview build:

 Retro Theme - Similar to Classic theme, but in place of the round animated Ns
logo, it uses the old Ns4.x animated logo, as well as the button icons from Ns4.x.

 Mozilla Calendar - Calendar feature similar to the one included with MS Outlook.
More information about Mozilla Calendar at - http://mozilla.org/projects/calendar/ .

 BannerBlind - Info about this add-on at http://bannerblind.mozdev.org/ .

 Home Button - Adds a homepage button to the navigation toolbar.

 Diggler - Adds two small buttons with features for power users.

 Netscape Search Toolbar - Pretty much self explanatory, that one!

 Plugins include the latest Sun Java (v1.4.2_05) and Flash Player.

I've also included the "Block images from this server" feature that appears as an
option in the right click menu in Navigator. AOL/Netscape once again neglected
to include this in the official release version of Netscape 7.2, just like they had
neglected to include it in the original Netscape 7.0 over two years ago!

Known issues:

 I'm still having a few problems with the aformentioned issues regarding
the inclusion of the Classic theme, so I've reluctantly decided not to include
the theme with this build. The Retro theme has taken it's place. If these
issues continue, and I find no way of resolving them, unfortunately I
may decide not to include the Classic theme in my final builds.

 The GRE . . . can anyone help me with the GRE issue that Fulvio mentioned
earlier. Since the GRE is a vital part of the entire package, I can't exactly leave
it out like I've left out the Classic theme. This issue needs to be resolved asap.

Ok, with all that in mind, you can grab this latest build by clicking the image below.

The download filesize is 27.8MB . . . . . . . . . Enjoy . . . !

Hmmm, I'd have thought one would have received a better response for this preview release . . .

Still, no matter . . . I've come to a decision . . .

Since Netscape/AOL have not made any announcements about whether they intend to release
an updated version of Netscape 7.2 that includes the fixes for the recently discovered security
bugs, that have since been patched and fixed in Mozilla 1.7.3, I'm putting this on hold for the
time being. Or, at least until we hear of plans of any Netscape 7.2.x maintenance updates.

But do not fret . . . I'm not put off yet!

I'm going to have another crack at customising Mozilla instead!

I'll most likely use the same sort of tricks and hacks I used to create my recent preview
release builds of Netscape 7.2 (Customised by DJGM.co.uk) and apply them accordingly.

Once I've got something built out of Mozilla 1.7.3 that's at least useable, I'll put the
results on this forum, and a link to a downloadable binary package for beta testing.

Bear in mind, this may take some time, as I've got various non internet related
things to do. So, bear with me, and watch this space . . . I'll keep you posted!

Borrowing a post from WindowsBBS, Ramona posted that...
when asked if AOL has plans to patch 7.2 to 7.3 or 7.2.1

Netscape was given advance warning on this issue. They may be negotiating a contract with off-site programmers but I have no idea at this time. Probably won't know until it is just about ready for release.

Is there an answer here?
Only sure way would be to use a .zip file.

DJGM.co.uk Distros of customised Mozilla based browser will most likely continue when the revival of
the Mozilla Client Customisation Kit
comes to fruition, and actually produces a useable Mozilla CCK!

In the meantime, since the customised Ns7.2 preview builds I created have since been withdrawn,
and with the fact that the codebase of Netscape 7.2 itself is effectively obsolete now, this thread
has outlived it's need to continue. It shall therefore be put on lockdown with immediate effect!
