Netscape 7.2 gif/png? display problem(s)

Postby Rockchik » Sat 08 Jan, 2005 2:16 pm

My first problem encountered was when downloading exe files they go to temp as 'filename.exe-gif' or similar (recent example: downloading netscape.net ISP software). I think I am supposed to get a pic that I can click on to start the exec from temp but since the gif doesnt display, i have to go to temp, rename the thing and then execute it.
Not sure if my download is renaming or what.
More recently, my Yahoo homepage displayed horribly and I sent a note to them asking if they perhaps changed things and didnt test with netscape?
Well naturally they asked for more info but then miraculously the homepage was displaying just fine with the exception of all the little transparent buttons (gifs?) to edit sections, etc. The main logo at the top left displays as an 'undisplay image box' but the links and the rest of the format lines up fine whereas it did not earlier this week.
NOW I only have the messy display with yahoos mail programs (everything displays text/centered) but apparently I need to notify a 'different' yahoo support group...
My QUESTION here is: is there a plugin or something to simply display gifs/pngs? I thought the ns..32.dll default thing was supposed to handle simple things like this but it obviously is not. My web search for plugins identified by 'type' was useless. Since you guys have helped me with NS weirdness before, I thought maybe I am not the only one with this problem?
Thanks!

On the .exe download problem:

Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Navigator -> Helper Applications.
Look for the entry application/octet-stream and, if found, select and and remove it.

On the Yahoo homepage display problem with missing images, do you notice a similar problem in Internet Explorer? If you also have missing images on the same webpages using Internet Explorer then it could be a HOSTS file issue, as mentioned in this NG thread:

Okay. Tired of the Red X's in some of my pages (even after installing
Mozilla and Opera to see if they were affected -- and they were), I
decided to try an experiment I picked up in one of my searches
for a solution: Renaming the HOSTS file
(located in windows\system32\drivers\etc).
It worked. All my missing images were restored.
<snip>[/tt]

Note that the C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ folder location given above for the HOSTS file was for WinXP. In Win9x the HOSTS file is in the C:\Windows folder.

This other forum thread has more information and other ideas regarding missing images on certain webpages:

yes and no

Yes, I had the octet/stream thing and I deleted it. It did not help the problem altho hopefully it will help the .exe problem.
No, I do not have any of these problems with IE.

Please explain the problem one more time, then, since I didn't really understand your earlier comment and question:
NOW I only have the messy display with yahoos mail programs (everything displays text/centered) but apparently I need to notify a 'different' yahoo support group...
My QUESTION here is: is there a plugin or something to simply display gifs/pngs?

Which image files, exactly, are you unable to view on the mail.yahoo.com page? Right-click where the image should be, select "copy image location" and then paste that into Notepad, for each image, and then paste that information here.

For example, on the Yahoo mail page I see an envelope image under where it says Welcome.... The image location is:
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/us/pim/newmail1.gif
here is the image:
Image ... can you see it here?

Under that is a light-bulb image for "Today's Tip". That image goes to:
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/us/pim/el/bulb1.gif
and here is that image:
Image... can you see it here?

yahoo mail mess

Postby Rockchik » Sun 09 Jan, 2005 6:43 pm

Here is one of the undisplayed gifs on the yahoo home page.
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/us/ ... nksy_l.gif

The mail pages have a different problem. they lack formatting and ALL images. for example: the navigation bar across the top is just all the text mashed together. There are no specific undisplayed gifs on the mail page as the formatting is messed up so the places where they should display aren't really defined.

I'm afraid I havent sent a screen print to yahoo help yet as I've been very busy lately but I will do it now.

thanks for your interest and help Alice!
Any help with the gif problem on the home pages is appreciated.

The link you sent shows only the Y icon of Yahoo, but I see it ok. And, I, similarly see the icons from Alice.
So, I have no idea what one can do. This works fine in Firefox1.0. I don't have NS7.02.

So, Rockchik:

Do you see the actual two images (envelope and lightbulb) in my last post, or this red "Y", which I'm adding here?
Image

If not, then first make sure you've tried the suggestions posted in the other forum,

http://www.ufaq.org/modules.php?name=Fo ... pic&t=3446
Netscape Homepage is Text Only

...especially the one to make sure your Image Manager isn't blocking us.i1.yimg.com or us.yimg.com (Edit > Preferences > Privacy and Security > Images > Manage Image Permissions).

Finally, remove all Yahoo or yimg.com cookies in the (Tools) Cookie Manager, and make sure these sites aren't being blocked on the Cookie Sites tab, just in case the problem is related to cookies.

problem fixed

Postby Rockchik » Mon 10 Jan, 2005 10:49 pm

Yes, I can see the Y gif you posted.
I think the problem was with yahoo somehow and they have fixed it since I sent them my screen prints yesterday altho they say they cannot reproduce the err.

Interesting, that each time I send them something they say everything seems find on their end but my problem miraculously disappears. I know it is/was not just a temp thing on my end because I've had the problem for a couple of weeks now. The day after I explain to them, it is fixed.
I truly think they made some changes and did not test fully in netscape and yes, I mentioned this in my email to them ;)

The only problem I seem to still have is the 'transparent' gifs on the yahoo homepage (the edit content buttons) are blank but I can live with that.
Also, maybe they will notice it in the screen print I sent and fix.
All other gifs and formatting seem to be working.
Thanks for all your help Alice!
Have a great new year!
