Well, I made a user.js file and it fixed my problem. Hallelujah!!! I realize that this is just a work-around solution, not a fix to the root problem; however, at this point I'm happy to have any solution at all.

Thanks to all who tried to help and gave this so much time and attention . . . and if anyone comes up with the solution to the root problem, I'm most interested in hearing about it.

Did you put the correct User_Pref in user.js file? Can you tell us, without adding any personal details, of course.
It is odd, and it is not. I have had for over four years Stuffit for windows as my default program, and, one day about one month ago, it stopped unzipping or zipping .zip files. I tracked that down to a Registry key which was modified. I even know what is the modification, which cannot be changed, by everybody told me that it was impossible, but it is happening.
I hope that your temporary fix holds. Otherwise, you may have to create a new profile, but after my experience, I would not bet on anything. I have no solution to my problem, which is not drastic. So, congratulation for figuring out a way. Is that the old mail account which you have?

I am still using the old Yahoo mail account. When the new Beta version came out, I was still using a Win98SE computer, and it could not use the Beta version. I never got around to upgrading to the new version after I got the new WinXP computer, especially after hearing from another user that he did not like it.

Here's what I put in the user.js file;

user_pref("mail.server.server1.realhostname", "pop.mail.yahoo.com");
user_pref("mail.server.server1.realuserName", "MyUserName");

I created the file using the technique that akbash had suggested, by copying the correct lines from the prefs.js file and creating the new user.js file in Notepad. I'm happy to report that the fix is still working this morning.
