Netscape 7 will NOT print on HP Deskjet 990Cxi

Postby dstudwell » Sat 16 Nov, 2002 7:21 pm

First let me state that I'm very happy with Netscape 7 and have been a long time Navigator 4.78 user (and other versions since 97')

Now onto my problem: Everytime I try to print something either from the web or a file my printer ( HP Deskjet 990Cxi ) starts to load a page and then just stops. Also the printer icon in the windows system tray will flash on but dissapear after just a second. (It normally stays much longer with other programs.)

I'm currently using Win 98 SE, 256 MB Ram and Norton Antivirus 8.0 (with Norton System 2002). Other than that, there is nothing running in the background. The Printer use to work fine with Navigator 4.78 and will still print with IE 5.5 (which I hate using). I've tryed reloading both new print drivers and Netscape 7 but nothing seems to work. Netscape's FAQ is pretty thin on printer trouble shooting.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem or more importantly the solution could be. Or, do I have to wait for Netscape 7.1 to be released.

Thanks for any help in advanced.

This is just a shot in the dark after looking at the Netscape 7 Newsgroup.

There is a known bug related to printing in Win98 and ME:

>>>>>>>start of bug snip>>>>>>>
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=130083
Bugzilla Bug 130083
unable to print on Win 98/ME with default spool setting

(The supposed workaround is:)

workaround = go into printer properties, choose details tab, choose
spool settings, choose print directly to printer.

then it works.
>>>>>end of bug snip>>>>>>>>
This reportedly has helped some people, but not all. The problem is evidently hard to narrow down to a cause.

I think you need the "HP Printer Identifier Plugin". While you have Netscape 7.0
running, click here to download and install it. In the unlikely event of that not
working, try downloading the newest drivers for your printer again, but try to
get them from a different location if you can. I do not have any HP hardware
myself. Does the HP support website let you to download printer drivers from
different FTP or web servers that are located in any other parts of the world?

If all else fails, I would advise contacting HP directly. I know that HP printers
will print documents from Netscape 7 and most other Mozilla based browsers,
as a friend of mine (who I recommend use Netscape and/or Mozilla instead of IE)
recently purchased a new HP printer, that works fine with Netscape 7.0 on his PC.

I may be mistaken, but I think that the HP printer plugin is just an advertising gimmick for HP and may not really relate to actual printing from Netscape 7. SillyDog has this to say about the plug-in under Netscape 6:

HP Printer Identifier Plugin, it provides extra links to Netscape's print centre for extra printing hints or support. Not really needed.

You may be correct, but if you can't print, you will need something. I have file nphppi.dll in my plugins folder, which has an interesting name: Peripheral Interrogator. I have model 695, and I would be happy to send the file, but having a geezer of a printer, it may be better to get the latest driver.
The rule is always the same: if your Netscape has been installed after the application, you will need to reinstall the software of the application, or you can use an old .dll file. My stash has come from way back when I got 4.5, folder copied from one to the other, and always up to date.

Thanks (got it to work)

Postby dstudwell » Sun 17 Nov, 2002 2:15 am

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried no spooling and spooling in RAW format instead of EFW? but niether of those seemed to work. I did not get as far as trying the HP Print plug-ins.

God bless Microsoft. After downloading the newest drivers from the HP web site it still would not work. It strangly would print the first time but not anytime after that until you rebooted the computer. ( Here comes the thanks to Microsoft) After about 6 hours of retrying every posible configuration and finally deleting everything HP from the windows/system folder it now seems to work. I couldn't tell you why though.

Thanks again for the help.
