!.Don't use NS8.1.2
2.Wait till 8.1.3 is coming out. There are bugs galore in 8.1.2, and, although I have had minimal problems, it may be due to the fact, that I am using other browsers, instead.

This just started happening to me, as well. I've 8.1.2 since it was released and had no problems. Methinks something is going on. When it's locked up disabling my DSL connection seems to stop whatever is running.

Could this be a bug in the auto security features or something more sinister ?

netscape 8.1.2 freeze up

Postby phillipsvilla » Sat 17 Feb, 2007 4:32 pm

I am having the same problem. Mine just started hanging last evening. I have tried
reinstalling and it continues to happen. Does any know if I can install 8.1.1 in a
seperate folder and will it pick up my files in 8.1.2.

There is no 8.1.1, but if you had 8.1, and it worked, then try to uninstall 8.1.2, keeping the profile, and then install 8.1. It will pick up your profile. If you, still, have problems, they could be in the profile, and you know the drill. But, my recommendation is to wait for 8.1.3 to come out.

This just started happening to my Netscape 8.1.2 browser yesterday also. Scouring the internet trying to determine the cause. Goes to 50% memory usage every 5 minutes or so, freezes up, and then releases. It's like clockwork. Have done the uninstall and reinstall to no avail. Have updated everything I can think of, blocked internet access of anything I'm suspicious of, and no difference. I'm working in FF 2.0 right now with no issues.

Think I have identified the cause of the problem (at least for me). Fulvio's comment about 8.1.2 having problems with Java scripts led me to see if my Java Runtime Environment was up-to-date. It wasn't - I was running 1.4.1.1. Looking for the current version led me to a website that said "As of Feb 14, 2007, the current version of Sun's Java client is 1.5.0_11. If you have previous versions of this Plugin installed, you should remove them." My browser problems started occuring about Feb 15 (weird coincidence or not?). I removed my JRE and Netscape stopped consuming 50% memory and freezing up. However, when I installed the new version of Java RE the problem reappeared again. I'll leave JRE uninstalled until Netscape comes out with a new release.

Well, if I exercised a little patience I would have had my answer.

For those of you who do know this is probably very basic. It works for me because I only use Netscape for basic browsing, I don't fill out forms, etc. So I don't need all the niceities that Java can do for me.

Anyway, Tools -> Options -> Site Control on the left side of the panel there is a box called Web Features. Uncheck "Enable Java" you can leave "Java Script" checked.

This is probably not a bad idea for me considering my limited use of Netscape. It plugs the biggest security problems with the browser.

netscape 8.1.2 freeze up

Postby phillipsvilla » Sun 18 Feb, 2007 12:59 pm

I have just tried disabling java in 8.1.2 and I still have the same problem of it freezing up.
So, I am still looking a solution. I suppose the best option is to use Foxfire.
