This forum is great.

Here's the page David, on this site, with instructions for the java fix:

I also have a lot invested in NS and refuse to give it up. No other browser (I've used Firefox, Opera, and MSIE) is as versatile for me..

I have doubts about the Java fix. I got fed up with the string of problems encountered by 8.1.2. I will, probably, check 8.1.3, if and when it is released, with everything working.
But Netscape8.1.2 does not belong in the same company as Firefox or Opera.
It is ponderous, i.e. uses a lot of "juice", and is slow. Unlike Firefox, it takes only a few extentions, making it much less versatile.
I surely would like to know in which way NS8.1.2 is the most versatile.

Where is a post from David?
May be this one?
It mentions Java, but it is no fix.

NetScape Versatility Question

Postby Netscape Adict » Fri 02 Mar, 2007 10:58 pm

For me it is teh way the SideBar works on Netscape is far superior for my specific needs. Firefox is a lot harder to switch between those folders (sidebar elements)

Ahhh, the fix

Postby dsperdut » Sat 03 Mar, 2007 1:42 am

I hope...

Thanks again, Bill. As Fulvio says, Firefox seems to have a lot more in the way of extensions and NS can be a pig. But I have only been using FF a month or so, really, and haven't had the time to really explore those extensions.

Plus we all prefer the devil we know to the one we don't. Or maybe it was the way the sky opened when I discovered NS in the first place, after slogging along with [*!@#$%^] IE for years!

The links look like good reading. I'll let you know how the java fix goes.

It works perfectly for me, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know why. But then I don't need to know why.

Well I have to agree it's not perfect. It sometimes (but not always) crashes on certain sites like Netflix, so I still have NS 7.2 that I resort to in those cases. But neither Firefox nor Opera works as well for me (not interested in "persuading" anyone why).
It's still necessary to use the INFERNAL MSIE for some MS sites, like their portfolio manager which I've used for years, and it works properly with no other browser (wonder why ?).

good result

Seems like the browser.jar fix is working. Or I'm having a rare lucky streak.

I didn't know what Macallan meant by "Save Target As" (yes, ok, challenged user...), but I left-clicked on the link and I got a download/open box and saved the file to the chrome directory. After that things seemed clear and no problems when running Netscape (@T+1 hr).

If this fix takes, I'll be very grateful. There are enough software glitches in life without a cranky Netscape.

Thanks, again, Bill (& Macallan)!

NS 8.1.3 now using excess memory

Postby BillyBoy » Fri 04 May, 2007 10:49 pm

Despite saying I wouldn't update to .3, I did it anyway. Guess what, it slowed and I looked and it was using 73K of memory rather than the 36K is started with.

I checked the first page of this thread about the host file fix, and guess what? NS 8.1.3 had commented out that line !! They're still doin' it !

I took out the "#" and now it's working OK again.

Just so you know....
