Netscape 8.1.2 released

Netscape Browser version 8.1.2 has been released recently. More details and download link is available at this page:

Release Notes document points to version 8.1 at time of writing this.

Be careful to look at every line of the installation screen. There is a Quick Launch checked, which you may not want to use.

Netscape 8.1.2 is based to Gecko version 1.7.5:

Somewhat interesting that it still uses a Gecko version from two years ago, but whatever. As Antony would say, 2 years ago is fine, you don't need the latest of everything. :P

So, even though it's a new release, it's still technically obsolete. Best to stick with SeaMonkey and/or Firefox methinks.

By the way... 8.1.2 was released... but we never had an 8.1.1, did we?

It appears that they don't even upgraded Flash to version 8.0.24 or newer. :shock:

After checking the state of about:plugins:

Whatever 8.1.2 is, it still has some of the old bugs. Uninstalling 8.1, removed the profile, although I had kept the same profile through 15 uninstall/reinstalls. I was never for a confirmation. Beside that rocky start, the installation appeared to have been clean. I had no trouble getting back to square one.
Still, moving around bookmarks is not easy. It won't take the 30 sec or longer of 8.1, but it still takes five to six seconds to complete a drag and drop. Old bookmarks seem to be deleted instantly.
and, the same 36 yrs. old definition, i.e. no protection, appear for spyware and ID Theft. However, Full Scans work, and sometimes during the scan, protected is indicated. Nothing new.
So far, in three attempts, it did not lock up, although in the second try, it brought up the profile manager. I have only one profile. The other two times, it started normally, but no ball of fire without Quick Launch.
As for resources, with Spyware scan going it was using a moderate 75 MBs. Previously, I rarely was under 100, and I am using two tabs now, up from the single homepage.
The single extra theme, which worked in 8.1, did not work in 8.1.2. Only one of the extentions which was compatible in 8.1, where in 8.1.2, i.e. forecastfox. Roboform and Mr Tech Install were not compatible.
And, as a final touch, I just tried to start 8.1.2, and, it froze on loading. May be Quick Launch is needed, after all. This is NS8.x last chance.

But how can he (and they) say that it is a security update when it's based to remerkable old Gecko version 1.7.5.

When researching the Flash issue again it appears that the file
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape Browser\Flash-NS.exe

has the following timestamp:

I.e. they shipped Netscape 8.1.2 with old, vulnerable version of Flash Player plugin.
