Sounds like possibly something might happen (or not happen) to Netscape 8.1?

Thanks for the link Fulvio.

I changed the subject to make it clear.

I don't know why that thread deserved to be locked.

UFAQ.org provides a file browser_fix_81.jar (click the link and choose to save the jar file) that fixes the following 3 annoying problems with 8.1:
  • Inability to add RSS Feeds
  • Inability to disable the new Back Button of Death 'feature' (BBoD)
  • Inability to resize the Options window.

UFAQ.org wrote:You can now:
  1. Add RSS Feeds via the orange RSS widget in the URL Window for a sites that support them, try one of 29 available at NewScientist.com
  2. If you click the Back button on a tab without any History, it is no longer closed. Note in some themes the drop down marker is still active, click it and you get a popup menu from which you can choose 'close tab' to close the tab, useful if the tab is an overflow one. (ie too many opened)
  3. The options window can now be resized. I had to make it slightly larger as by default NS8 it resizes it with almost everytime option you select. Unfortunately this means it won't remember your new size, but at least you can stretch it to view everything if you're using a font at 10pt or greater.
While thes are unsupported fixes, they seem to work fine for me, and have been tested by other forum users without any hitches, All 3 fixes for a few days, see here .... The BBoD fix, for a few months, see here.
To install:
  1. Exit NS8
  2. Backup the original NS8 browser.jar in your:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape Browser\chrome folder
  3. Download the new one to this folder.
  4. Rename this new one to browser.jar

Thanks Macallan1824.
In short, it seems like UFAQ.org did not credit the source at all.

I hope you don't mind me providing your fix directly from Netscape Browser Archive. You will be credited properly.

Antony.

None at all, you can post both up if you want.......

......you're also welcome to plagiarise the install instructions, this seems to be the popular approach.........

Unfortunately, it's not the first time.......

Many times information about sites publishing information without giving credit spreads sooner we have expexted. Why not to credit source at all, difficult to understand!

In fact, it is not the only way to say fix provided by UFAQ if they only offer a downlod link to information of 3rd party.

Thanks.
the first one is published in http://sillydog.org/netscape/ns8/add_rss_feed_fix.php

I hope the credit is sufficient.

macallan1824 and J-M,
That's Jay Garcia.

I always try my best to give credit or provide preference. That's one reason articles do not get published that fast here in SillyDog701. There's no need to claim that SillyDog701 wrote all articles/solutions.

I will fix the title shortly.

I agree with Antony, about mentioning the fix. But, considering that I had never noticed the problem, I was concentrating on the tail end of the message. Profman got the drift.
My interpretation of locking the thread was because there is no point in continuing. I hope that I am wrong, but I feel that Netscape, even as the present by name only Netscape , is a thing of the past.

The fix to missing contextual menu in Downloads Window is available in http://sillydog.org/netscape/ns8/download_menu_fix.php

Again, thanks to macallan1824 for the solution.

The toolkit.jar may be a good fix, but the ufaq.org was talking about something:
FIX: Add RSS Feeds, Disable New "Back Button Of Death" 'feature', Resizing Options Windows

Or did I lose something in the convoluted replies?

Yup, there are two fixed files:-
  1. the missing download menu - in toolkit.jar
  2. Add RSS Feeds, Disable New "Back Button Of Death" 'feature', Resizing Options Window in browser.jar
