Time to go back to NS

Years ago NS was the browser I used when I ran from IE. Then I got hooked on the MO suite, calendar and all. Now the MO people have got me, they are discontinuing MO. All I can say is ...why? I've tried FF but I really don't like it and I miss all the extras that came with MO. I just can't understand why they didn't push MO, the more mature robust browser.

Is it time to migrate back to NS? I will miss my MO calendar. When discussions came up about the death of NS I was one that always said AOL has plans for it. If NS doesn't give AOL the edge, or set them apart as hoped will NS then be dead?

I thinks BG has seen a break in the ranks and that is why a new IE is on its way, tabs and all. BG never misses an opportunity. This may be the opportunity that will forever end the browser war.

You can have anything you want in Firefox, or Thunderbird mail.
I, hardly ever, use the Calendar, which does not come with either Mozilla or Netscape7.2. I, just, installed Calendar in the preview of Moz1.7.6 and FF1.02. You have to pick the right version, although I don't know if it matters.
I access Calendar from the Preferences, for Mozilla, and Tools in Firefox. In Firefox, there is an additional goodie. You can get a Calendar icon on the Menu Bar, from View|Toolbars|Customize
But, don't expect anything in NS8 beta. Everything is up in the air.
I addition Mozilla has a standalone calendar, Sunbird.
I am considering NS8, and no more than that, and I am keeping up with Mozilla Suite, but I fail to see what all the noise about separate applications. Many websites are already supporting Firefox, while they were not supporting the Suite.

A very simple (or simple-minded) question -- how do you get to your e-mail using Netscape 8 beta? I've been unsuccessful trying to get to the mail function. Also, is any mail downloaded using NS8 accessible to NS7.2?

Netscape 8 beta is a web browser and web browser only; it does not implement any sort of POP3/IMAP e-mail client. Unless you only use webmail services, to access your e-mail you'll need to install a separate e-mail client. I recommend Mozilla Thunderbird, derived from the same code as Netscape 7.2. Or simply stay with Netscape 7.2.

The Webmail button doesn't seem to be working all that well. I have a webmail account from Netscape.net I clicked on the webmail button, typed in my screen name and password, but when I click okay, it does nothing. This feature must not be availible yet or until the final version of NS8 comes out. Could this be the case?

It is working for me, but I know that it has not worked for others.

Anyway, I just set up another profile, and it is radically difference, and I get Webmail.
After fighting with the large Search bar, I noticed that clicking on the small arrow below the N of netscape search infamy, drops down the same list as in firefox. This may have been reported, but I, surely, missed it, as it was missed by many others.

What exactly are the system requirements for this browser?
Can an older PC handle it?

According to the Release Notes:
Operating System:
Windows XP
Windows 2000
Windows 98 SE, ME

Hardware Requirements:
233 MHz processor
64 MB RAM
35 MB hard drive space

Other:
Internet Explorer 6.0 (If using the Trident rendering engine)

Recommended Configuration:
1 GHz processor
256 MB RAM


Ordinarily system requirements for other Netscape and Mozilla browsers are actually rather subjective (I have been able to run them on slower computers with less RAM than specified and on Windows 95, for example).

Unfortunately (and typical of AOL's own products), the Netscape 8.0 Beta installer initiates a nasty unbypassable check to physically prevent you from attempting to install it on a system that doesn't meet or surpass the requirements exactly. One member was unable to install the browser on his system because he had 63 and not 64 MB of RAM.

No. Intern et Explorer is integral part of the OS. Yes, you can surf without IE, but see how much luck you have. And, the problems with Netscape started when Microsoft decided that it wanted to have a monopoly.
A lot of purists blame AOL, but AOL, which is run by a bunch of klutzes had no interest nor confidence in unseating IE. That cannot be done.
But, as for the installer, AOL started doing that with their own software. But, don't ask me why they have to do it with external software. But, on the other hand the software is not created in house. Who knows?

Skypilot theme available

I think that this is a new announcement. There is a brand new Skypilot Theme.
Read the post on the message board
It looks gorgeous, and I toggled the menu bar position to the left. In order to do a successful installation, download the Theme to the Desktop. Then Tools| Themes will open the Themes Manager. Minimize NS8. That will leave the the Theme Manager with plenty of room to drag and drop the theme. Select it, and restart NS8. I have found a minor (squashed) bug. The number of blocked popup, if used is literally squashed.
