Netscape 8 Question

Postby ve6tp » Wed 17 Jan, 2007 2:53 pm

Is Netscape 8. an upgrade to v7.2 or is it a totally new browser?

If it is an upgrade and I install it, then will I loose all my existing mail and bookmarks, etc. that I have with Netscape 7.2?

Thanks

It's new. It has a dual rendering engine and no email client. You'd be further to install SeaMonkey which is essentially an updated and secure version of NS 7 without all the AOL stuff to bloat it.

You can download SM here: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/

In addition to what James said, Netscape 8.x is not an upgrade to 7.2, as it is a only the browser with a
built in AIM client. It doesn't have any of the other features that were part of the Netscape 7.x suite,
such as Mail/Newsgroups, Address Book, Composer (HTML Editor) ... etc.

There's some speculation at the moment that AOL/Netscape may soon offer a new upgrade for existing
users of the Netscape 7.x suite, since they've recently appointed a new Netscape programming team.
But until we find out for certain what they're planning, and if there are any official Netscape product
announcements due anytime soon, I second James' suggestion of upgrading to SeaMonkey.

And, in addition, NS8 is quite defective. It locks up on starting, to move one bookmark from one location to another, may take half a minute, and more.
Although I am an user of the standalone Firefox+ mail client Thunderbird (which can be used in conjunction with NS8.x), there is no reason to have NS8.x, except in my case, and similar instances, when one wants to be able to help individuals who made the leap.
If you do not want to switch to Seamonkey, or Firefox+Thunderbird(which can import your 7.2 settings), stick with 7.2, and wait a while. It may be worth the wait.
