netscape 8

Postby cemed » Sat 14 May, 2005 5:10 pm

I have Xp and netscape 7.2 for browser. We use our computer for card games (bridge mostly) and research and email to friends and family. Should I consider installing Netscape 8? We are doing fine with 7.2. Just like to keep up with all the new stuff coming out.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Since Netscape 8 is based on an old version of Firefox, it's subject to a ton of security vulnerabilities. So is Netscape 7.2, for that matter. I'd actually suggest that if you want to keep up with security and the times, that you should upgrade to either Firefox or Mozilla Suite instead.

And, my two cents. Vulnerabilities don't mean that anything has happened, but it could happen. I am sure that as I type this someone has found a vulnerability for the newly issued Mozilla1.7.8 and Firefox1.0.4.
There is not much of a use for the branded Netscape when you can have a safer browser. Netscape8 is not finalized, and I hope that they will issue a more up-to-date beta with all the latest holes patched. But, if AOL is indeed going to come out with a final NS8, I think that you should try it. I have been calling it a mongrel, as for its ability to render pages as IE. And, it is a browser only. It can be quite a trip to a newcomer, even having experience with Firefox. You should look into Mozilla Thunderbird for mail.
I would definitely consider getting used to something new, paranoia or total unconcern aside.

Thanks for your reply. Murphy's law should read-The Computer's Law. There are so many probabilities.
