Netscape Browser 8.0.3.1 released

Download The Netscape Browser, v8.0.3.1:

Download link (Windows version only) is totally same as earlier, pointing to http://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape8/e ... -setup.exe .

Nsb-setup.exe is dated as 25-Jul-2005 12:31 (281kB). The Full version is 13Mb.

From Security Alerts page at http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/security/alerts.jsp :

• MFSA 2005-56 Code execution through shared function objects
• MFSA 2005-53 Standalone applications can run arbitrary code through the browser

Only two fixed issues? :o :? :?

Are you serious? They are only numbers. You get what they give you, if you care.
Should anyone care, the link gives only the stub installer.
Everything else is cool. Not sure if other themes which worked in 8.0.2 will work. No big deal. Make sure to pay attention at all options on installation.

• Fixed remaining history syncing issues between rendering engines
• Various bug and crash fixes

Thanks for the quoting, I was just adding a reply :wink: and pointing to possible MFSA2005-47, -55 and -45 issues which are Critical according to Mozilla Foundation, and according to security companies handling 8.0.2 vulnerabilities.
Let's wait for additional information from America Online.

It seems that 'Firewalling' issue handled at http://www.mozilla.org/security/announc ... 05-47.html (Code execution via "Set as Wallpaper" i.e. Background) is fixed now.

Just tested JavaScript InstallVersion.compareTo() function vulnerability; http://www.mozilla.org/security/announc ... 05-50.html (Possibly exploitable crash in InstallVersion.compareTo) with Windows XP and 8.0.3.1 _WAS_ affected, the crash effect was just similar as with 8.0.2. :(


After that tested Content-generated events affecting browser UI vulnerability; http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9401 and http://www.mozilla.org/security/announc ... 05-45.html (Content-generated event vulnerabilities), rated as High risk:

version 8.0.3.1 WAS affected and Status Bar just went away.

And finally, XBL Scripts JavaScript state bypass vulnerability: XBL scripts are still running. This is issue http://www.mozilla.org/security/announc ... 05-46.html (XBL scripts ran even when Javascript disabled).

Now Netscape has confirmed that they were fixing only two critical issues:
Netscape fixes browser flaws

Netscape 8.0.3.1 takes care of two flaws that were previously disclosed and fixed in Firefox, the open-source Web browser on which Netscape 8 is based, Netscape spokesman Andrew Weinstein said.
Ten less-serious flaws will be dealt with in another update due in the coming weeks, Weinstein said. "We wanted to make sure that we tackled the larger issues immediately," he said.

So the *less-serious* flaws will be updated shortly? That's good to know.

It's better to have serious flaws fixed now rather than leaving them unpatched for longer.

I just noticed this...
During the installation, the default theme is Netscape Winscape, was that in earlier version as well?

Is Netscape phasing out (slowly) the unique Fusion Theme?

I believe the Winscape theme, as well as the option to use either it or "Fusion" when installing, has been present in Netscape 8.0 ever since the first non-beta release was available.

Maybe the Winscape theme is more popular, and they've made it the default owing to popular
demand. If so, that's the first wise move Netscape has made with the GUI on Netscape 8.x.x.

Let's face it . . . it does conform to proper standard UI conventions, and it is a darn sight
better looking than that total and utter dog's breakfast known as the Fusion theme!

Put it this way, if Netscape 8.x.x was available for Mac OS X (like it should be) would
the Fusion theme conform to the hallowed Apple Human Interface Guidelines at all?
