Netscape died again?

Postby Joji » Tue 23 May, 2006 1:56 am

I found an old article, but it has not been discussed here.

Netscape Reportedly Trying for a Comeback
from eweek, March 16, 2006.

In order to do this, over the last few weeks Netscape owner Time Warner has fired some of its Netscape-focused employees

This quotation might explain why Netscape Browser has never updated since 8.1, and there are no updates on Theme Park or Theme SDK.

But I'm not sure if Paid Content.org and ValleyWag are reliable sources.
Any input will be appreciated.

Thanks Joji for pointing out this news report.

I have no idea how accurate this report is, however I noticed that Netscape 8.1 has not been updated for a while.

The link to the paidContent.org article is here: Netscape.com To Be Relaunched As a Digg-Like Site; Calacanis Heading It
[quote="paidContent.org"]The storied Netscape.com will be revived again by AOL, and will relaunch soon as a Digg-like user-driven news/aggregation site with Jason Calacanis at the helm, sources have told paidContent.org. Some Netscape-Calacanis rumors first surfaced on SV gossip site Valleywag.
The original Netscape division has been more than decimated over the last few years and layoffs have been almost routine these last few months. The new Netscape.com will be headed by Calacanis, who came in through AOL's acquisition of Weblogs Inc. Not clear what role Weblogs, Inc.'s blogs would play but both divisions would report in Calacanis, according to the sources. He already reports to Jim Bankoff, executive VP of Programming & Products, who would also oversee the Netscape.com changes.

Calacanis has been a big Digg fan and has written about it on his blog a few times. He has yet to respond to our query about these details, but said on his own blog in response to rumours: “There are no details to share right now, but if that changes I'll certainly let you know.â€

Thanks Antony.

In addition, you might want to search Valleywag with keyword: Netsape.
There are many articles (gossips?) around this issue if you scroll down to March.
One of the most interesting to me is;
Valleywag: Guest story: Netscape fallout laid out

Joji,
since Netscape has been bought by AOL, and they let go the people who worked for Netscape, any work has been farmed out to a Canadian company. So, the existence of any Netscape depends on the whim and wishes of AOL, plus, is there any money there?
That is the main reason why I have stopped being a Netscape user. It is pointless.

Netscape

I have to agree with Fulvio. I think Netscape's future is highly questionable. I was a big supporter until the latest update, which just nwould not work, and Jay Garcia at Netscape had no answers.

With IETab in FF and Seamonkey, Netscape no longer has any niche anyway. Even when it worked, compared to these, it was slow and hugh. I have settled for now on Seamonkey as my browser default, and I am very happy. It is doing everything that Netscape 8.X used to do.
