I don't know if this is new or not, but it appears AOL has turned all Netscape resources over to Mozilla along with about 2M dollars.

I don't personally use Netscape any more, but remember it with fondness from when I did. Hope everything turns out well for them.

I heard that America Online did turn over all the Mozilla related stuff Netscape owned, such as the Mozilla.org webservers etc, to the Mozilla foundation.

It's definitely a sad time for Netscape...

I know I was surprised when I saw it, but I guess it didn't come unexpectedly. After AOL made that deal with Microsoft and announced they wouldn't be using Gecko, I knew Netscape probably wasn't going to be around much longer.

It's sad to see it die. I started out with version 3.04 Gold in 1997. Netscape was king, IE was crap. (it still is actually. lol)

But really Netscape has been on a downhill slide since the 4.x series. I know I waited until 2000 to switch to the 4.7x series. I actually used it up until last year when I got a computer fast enough to run Mozilla comfortably.

I think Netscape 6 really hurt them. I know I downloaded those early preview releases and really was not impressed. And they got such bad press because of those releases. It was really quite a disaster for Netscape. AOL really mismanaged things.

And now they've killed Netscape... :(

At least the spirit of Netscape lives on in Mozilla. I think Mozilla has a bright future ahead of her.

And also... about CCK and Netscape 7.1, I don't see what the problem is? Can't you just use the Netscape 7.02 CCK and load the Netscape 7.1 full installer into it? I did that and it seems to work fine.

Also... has anyone else been having problems with downloading files from the Netscape archive?? I hope they haven't taken it down. :( I was trying to download some old versions just incase they did decide to take it down.

I've found that when I attempted to make a customised test build of Netscape 7.1 with the
old CCK app for Ns7.0 it did not apply all the customisations, such as the personal tag on
the end of the user agent string . . . The (ax) tag which represents the ActiveX plugin
took precedence. Even with hacking various .js files, like all-ns.js and activex.js, the
result was either an unaltered UA string, or a Ns7.1 build that just wont startup.

Ideally, we need a CCK app specially for Ns7.1, but now that Netscape is all but gone,
the chances of this being released anytime soon, if at all, are remote to non-existant.

Mozilla still needs to have a release so fhat can be used by the end user.

Every version of Moz released, has been labeled for testing purposes only. They need to steer away from that model, and release something which the end user can be comfortable using.

Mandrake wrote:DJGM, that is totally truthful. At the time of America Online acquiring Netscape Communications, IE4 and NN4 had about 45% of the market each, if AOL had released a few new versions of Communicator, and indeed a Communicator 5 - Netscape still could have remained the browser king . . . !

C/NET did a series stories on NCSA Mosaic. According to them, the share in 1998 was 54% Netscape and 39% for MSIE. 7% were others.

At one point it had much more. But Netscape never had a chance to be Browser King, ensured the second IE became bundled software. By the way, what's up with John Fitzgerald?

Mozilla insiders have been saying that it could be about a year before MozFB goes gold for end users.

That's what they roadmap is for guys. Please bear in mind that Mozilla is an ongoing process and not a release-based end-user market.

In other words, it'll be released . . . "When it's ready".

Some people have mentioned about what browser they should use now... well, I don't see anything wrong with continuing to use Netscape 7.1. As we know, it's 2 years ahead of Internet Explorer 6.0. The next version of IE won't be released until 2005 (and many people won't be using it as it will only be availible with Longhorn), so Netscape 7 is still going to be a viable browser for at least another 3 years.

I'd be very suprised if Netscape actually lost any users to IE because of this.

IE6 is almost two years old, and the minor improvements amde in 5.0, 5.5.and 6.0 don't really help IE, the last *major* work on IE was on the 'web intergration' with IE 4, back in 1997. Communicator has had a few updates since 1997, none to serious though. Mozilla just keeps getting better and better though :D
