MozillaNews has a link to a Reuters article entitled "Sun Micro to Double Beijing Software Center." MozillaNews seems to think it's possible that continuing work on Netscape is possible.
The truth is, all might be free if they valued freedom, and defended it as they ought.

News.google.com says the cheap ISP called Netscape Online has just started its
services in Canada.

The access application "Netscape Online" is partially browser-independent (it is said to respect your default browser and mail client settings), but some features require Internet Explorer:

Here's the minimum system requirements . . .
It's bad enough for it to require Internet Explorer 5.0+ as one of the necessary browsers,
but even AOL should know that Netscape 5.0 does NOT exist! The browser requirements
on the FAQ page seriously and urgently needs to be re-written as soon as possible!
It doesn't support Macintosh computers either. That is not good.
Minimum Requirements are:
*Microsoft® Windows® 95 with Windows Socket 2 Update, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000,
Windows XP operating system or later. (Apple® Macintosh® computers are not supported)
*133 MHz Pentium® processor or faster
*Minimum 64 MB of RAM
*An Internet browser: Internet Explorer 5.0+ or Netscape® 5.0+
*Adobe Acrobat viewer to open PDF files (Netscape Online
invoices aregenerated as viewable PDF formatted files)
*Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device

Look at your User Agent. It says: Mozilla/5.0. I think that the 5.0 refers to the browser which is not a 4.x.
As for the optional way to access, this was the main bone of contention, which I mentioned a few times in the past. AOL beta testers of AOL7.0 Gecko were very upset that the browser could not render some pages as well as IE. We know the story, but an average user could care less about adherence to code. A few people suggested that there would be a way to access the Web with a IE or Gecko-based browser.
I know that the concept is difficult to swallow, but AOL is a business.

The "Mozilla/5.0" part of a browser UA string refers to it being a 5th generation browser.
That includes all the incarnations of Mozilla (App-Suite, Firebird, Camino, K-Meleon) plus
others like Konqueror, Safari, and of course, all version of Netscape from 6.0 upwards.
(IE5.0+ is not a 5th generation browser, as it still has "Mozilla/4.0" on it's UA string.)
If they're going to mention any Netscape browser as part of their minimum system
requirements, it should ideally be a minimum of Netscape 7.0. IMHO though, there
should be no requirements of a pre-installed browser. This service should bundle
the latest version of Netscape with it, or there's absolutely no point in using
the Netscape name in the branding. It may as well be branded "AOL Lite".
If this situation remains the same for both the US and UK versions of this new
service, then I will have no other option, but to boycott it, tell others not to
bother with it, and use some other internet access service instead.

away with, first cancelling the once popular cross platform web browser once

OK, before we get worked up, are we even sure this isn't a BETA or a mock-up (no pun intended) of the Netscape ISP? I personally believe that NO ISP should require an browser or MUA to use the service. However, I guess i'm in the minority...

maker of web browser applications is permanently dead and buried. Finito. Kaput. Deceased. End of.
Even though the "Save The Netscape Browser" petition has received 1500+ signatures, despite the
good intentions of those behind the petition, as far as I'm concerned, sadlyit has ultimately failed.
For what it's worth, I'll still occasionally use Netscape 7.1 on my computers until
security vulnerabilities are found in it's codebase, after which I may just remove all
instances of Netscape, and then continue with Mozilla as my main browser of choice.
