Netscape.net e-mail in M2

Postby ernnnt » Mon 22 Sep, 2003 8:35 pm

I am trying to help someone configure their M2 settings.

She has a netscape.net e-mail address (username@netscape.net) and would like to download/retrieve her netscape.net mail into M2.

Although she can access her Netscape mail via webmail, she was able to download her messages in the Netscape e-mail client. She'd like to do the same in Opera M2 now.

What settings do I use?

Thank you!

So far I wasn`t able to force M2 to read mail from imap.mail.netcenter.com / port 143  It is even more difficult since I am behind proxy, and in this case it is awful that Opera doesn`t support SOCKS protocol. I wasn`t succesful even with mapped links which are available in my proxy server. BTW my Proxy does support SOCKS protocols. :? RRRRRRR :x

Netscape.net emails only work in the Netscape email client, no wonder why you cannot make it work in Opera's email client.

Gregor and Mandrake, thanks for replying.

My friend is going to set up a new account on OperaMail and get away from Netscape...

And, not so well, if at all, in Netscape Mail.

If IMAP is a standard, then any e-mail client with IMAP capability should be able to work with Netscape WebMail via IMAP.

EDIT

I was able to create the IMAP account in M2, but was not able to retrierve any mail from my Netscape WebMail account. Opera indicated it had connected, then disconnected.

Mail was sent to it, so I know there is something there.

Netscape.net email addresses do not use standard IMAP settings, you must use a recent version of Netscape mail for this to work!

The previous OperaMail (OM) service (which was free) offered IMAP-based e-mail, in addition to via the web.

The new OM service is free via the web, but is a pay service to use it with POP3.

One can't fault people for at least trying something else to see if it works. :)

Does your friend not have an email account with her ISP which s/he could use in Opera M2?

Here's my two cents worth-
I have a netscape.net account which I have had for many years.
I don't have Netscape anymore, I am using IE6.0 as you all know. Not because I prefer it either. :(

I just type www.netscape.com in the location bar, and enter and then in the upper left hand corner it says MAIL
I just click on that and type my user name and password and voila!! It works.

I'm just telling you this as someone said you had to have Netscape for it to work. I just have AIM, but I removed the little man.

Just of interest... why don't you have Netscape anymore and why do you have to use IE 6.0?

Then I guess we should be resigned to the fact that one can only access Netscape WebMail via IMAP, using only the Netscape browser.

So much for open standards... :n7mail:
