Netscape on Linux

Postby swirven » Wed 13 Nov, 2002 9:42 am

I am running Netscape 7 on Linux and I noticed the adblocker file is already in Netscape. I am curious as to why it is included on the Linux version and not the Windows version.

The adblocker isn't included in any version of Netscape 7. It'll only be there if
you have a checkbox labelled "Open Unrequested windows" in Preferences,
under Advanced - Scripts and Plugins. To make sure you have adblocking
installed in your Netscape 7, click here to install the adblocker.xpi file.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I am using Lindows right now and it comes with Netscape 7 and it has the adblocker file already included in it. It is listed as "Open unrequested windows". Just like after you add it on the Windows version. Even more so it comes set by default already unchecked. Maybe it is just set like that through Lindows. I have not run Netscape on any other Linux distros. I am new to Linux and thought I would try this Lindows out. I am very familiar with Netscape on Windows and I know how it comes without out the adblocker. I was just curious about this.

That would explain it. The version of Netscape that is bundled with LindowsOS
is heavily customised to fit in with the rest of the OS. LindowsOS isn't really a
"pure" Linux distro, but a heavily customised, and very sugar coated one, to
hide most of the Unix stuff, that would have most Linux newbies run a mile!
The LindowsOS people have probably decided to include the adblocker with
the bundled Netscape browser, but to make sure you have the adblocker
properly installed, I would certainly recommend that you click on the
adblocker.xpi link, that I included in the message I posted earlier.

OK, thanks DJGM. Yeah from what little I know about Linux I kinda thought the Lindows is more for newbies. Which is me. I tried two of the other more true Linux distros and with out knowing anything about Linux I could not get any of my downloads installed. Other than that I liked everything else about them.

I do not like Lindows... getting a conventional distribution with good documentation is a much better investment.

As for the adblocker working with the bundled version of Netscape 7.0, that would be a quick modification - not unheard of!
