Netscape to discontinue Netscape Mail (WebMail) service

Postby Antony » Tue 18 Jul, 2006 3:12 am

Netscape will discontinue their web mail service (Netscape Mail and Netscape WebMail) effective 19th August 2006. Current users will be transferred to AIM mail. Users' e-mail addresses will remain [tt]@netscape.net[/tt] and same login, but using AIM® Mail service instead.
Online storage will be increased from 250 MB to 2 GB.

My last post on this thread went into some details of the process.
One question is still unanswered. What if I have, already, @aim.com accounts with the same username as @netscape.net? Will the @netscape.net mail be moved to the existing @aim.com? I can see a mess ahead.

Sorry, I missed that post.

I wonder that as well.
I guess they might simply forward all [tt]@netscape.net[/tt] to your [tt]@aim.com[/tt] account, but that would create a mess.
Since my [tt]@netscape.net[/tt] is inactive, I am not going to worry about this.

Antony,
I posted the details because they threw at me so much that I could not figure out what they were saying. It is good to have a separate thread, and, I will add here, if I think that there is anything worthwhile. But, the take home message is/will be that @netscape.net is a thing of the past.

Fulvio, and Antony,

From the Netscape Mail FAQ:
* For Netscape Mail users who also have an AOL® Mail account with the same Screen Name, the Netscape Mail service will be upgraded to AOL Mail, not AIM Mail. All Netscape mail will be transferred and placed in folders which will be located under the 'Saved on AOL' section. For AOL Mail users, storage is unlimited. Saved messages however are kept for a limit of up to approximately 27 days.

Does this help?

Partially, I guess Fulvio's problem is he has AIM Mail account, not AOL Mail.

For me, I do not have AOL or AOL Mail account, but emails sent to [tt]@aol.com[/tt] tend to deliver to my [tt]@aim.com[/tt] account as well.

I know AOL, AIM, Netscape (, and more) all use the same AOL Screenname system (login), but it's getting confusing.

Now, I don't understand it, at all.
For me, I do not have AOL or AOL Mail account, but emails sent to @aol.com tend to deliver to my @aim.com account as well.
. How could mail be sent to an @aol.com account, unless someone made an error? But, if this is the case, it is nice that it gets to you. But, you would have no way to know that it gets to @aol.com. Probably, the username takes precedence.
It is funny that this is even coming up, because I had, over the years @aol.com, and @cs.com (Compuserve accounts), and I had to select unique usernames, which were not duplicated in @netscape.net accounts. Good thing, because my @aol.com username became so spam-riddled that I could not use it. Any other account with the same username became target of spam, in no time.
In fact, if I want to receive spam, all I need to do, is to set up an account for "fperini@anything.whatever".
My concern is that there may be problems going from @netscape.net to @aim.com, because I already the account, with the same username for both.

I just tested it again, sending an email to (my screenname)@aol.com and I receive it from (my screenname)@aim.com. It's interesting but kind of annoying as I got quite a few spam.
Since I've never had an AOL account (I only have Netscape or AIM), and I am pretty sure that screenname is not used in AOL, since I used to have that Netscape Mail account (screenname) for ages.

It is weird, and I can confirm what you found. I used the username of the @netscape.net, which also for @aim.com. I had an @aol.com account, but never with that username. I sent it from one of my @cox addresses, as if it was username@aol.com, and it got to my username@aim.com. So, I replied, and it got to my cox address, and the sender was the cox address. There is no mention of aol.com nor aim.com in the Message source.
As for the original message from the bogus @aol.com, it looks like AOL drops it like a hot potatoes. Look at the message sources. Sort of scary, isn't it?

Netscape.com portal has the following statement at the upper right corner of the page:

Attention Netscape users

Your Netscape mail hasn't gone anywhere, you can find it right here! Also, My.Netscape and your Stock Quotes are still online as well.

Words 'Netscape mail' are the link to thte http://mail.netscape.com/ address.

I'm not sure when this information appeared to the Netscape.com site http://www.netscape.com/ .

The information on the website does not tell the full story. Present users of a @netscape.net account have received a lengthy e-mail. Basically, it says that @netscape.net accounts will continue getting their mail up to Aug 19, at which time all mail will go to the same username@aim.com. Will there be a link to aim.com after that date. I should hope so. The fact remains that @aim.com can be set up as an IMAP account in any mail clients.
