Netscape Updates for Win16 via SmartUpdate

Postby Don_HH2K » Fri 14 May, 2004 4:56 pm

I am currently using Netscape 4.08 on my old 3.1 laptop (which I don't use all that often). Can I run SmartUpdate to update the components to those of NS4.8 but still let it run in Win16?

Hi,
No Netscape 4.08 is the highest you can go on 16 bit platform.
Yiou need at lease Nt.3.51 to go higher then that.

The Release Notes for Netscape 4.80 state:
Communicator 4.8 does not run on Windows 3.1 or on Macintosh 68K systems.

I personally can not tell you if this is actually true or not. The Release Notes for Netscape 4.78 say the same thing. Hopefully someone else can advise you on this matter.

My SmartUpdate link in Netscape 4.79 has not taken me to any smart download for a long time. It is just re-directed to the download for Netscape 7.1.

In that case, is there any recent version of any browser for Win16? I would have upgraded my 3.1 machine (which I only use for testing purposes), but my SyQuest drive recently gave out and now I can't get the contents of the disk onto the machine.

The newest versions of the most popular browsers available for Windows 3.1x are
 Netscape Navigator and Communicator 4.08
 Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01
 Opera 3.62
As far as "recentness" is concerned, all these browsers were released roughly five years ago. Although I am loathe to admit it, Internet Explorer 5.01 may be the most modern web browser available in terms of technology such as CSS support, although even so it is inferior to its 32-bit counterpart in matters such as that it cannot display PNG images. (The 16-bit version of Netscape 4.08 also lacks PNG capability, although the 32-bit version has PNG image support).
Personally, I used Netscape Navigator 4.08 when I ran it under Windows 3.1x last year, on a 66MHz 486DX2 computer with 16MB of RAM. Speed and performance was entirely acceptable, although back then I had low standards of rendering ability.

Unfortunately for now, I guess I'll have to use IE501. If you think about it, there probably aren't many security vulnerabilities since we are talking about a dead OS here.

Tucows appear to have the Windows 3.1x version of Internet Explorer 5.01 available for download (although I haven't tested it myself for confirmation).

Hi,
May I add that I see very little difference between 4.08 and 4.79

Compatibility issues... I have found that sites look better in NS4.79 then they do in 4.08
