Netscape Webmail feedback

Postby Fulvio » Tue 28 Sep, 2004 10:54 am

Hi,
I just got a reply to my latest question to Mark Gregor, who is the AOL Product Manager, Web properties, aka Netscape Webmail. A quote follows:

"The address book issue is a known one. I've been working with ops to get it fixed. Should know something today. Just to let you know, we are in the process right now of completely upgrading webmail. I'm shooting for it to be released before Thanksgiving, with a second additional release after the first of the year. To say it's going to be better is a huge understatement, but I can't give any details yet."

Good News

Well, its good to know that they are working on the problem and that we will see some sort of resolution. However, I do have two concerns:

-Are you sure that the e-mail from Mr. Gregor was intended for public posting? Several years ago I sent an e-mail to a netscape.com address and received a reply with their quoting policy prominently displaced as a footer. It said:
"This is a private message to you. Please don't quote me to others
without my written permission, which is not granted herewith."
Hopefully that policy doesn't still exist or you're going to get Mr. Gregor in trouble!

-A complete upgrade to Webmail also worries me. AOL has no incentive to continue support for Webmail inside Netscape 7.x. They may decide to make it only a webmail interface and eliminate support from within the browser. Or they might re-write the support breaking all versions of Netscape Gecko except for some new minor release like 7.2.1. AOL has an incentive to making people use the web interface so that they can sell ads. I hope that the new system is better than what we are currently using and not worse.....

As for your first concern, this is the last e-mail on the exchange.

"In a message dated 9/28/2004 11:47:04 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time,

That's more like you! Thanks for the quick reply. I am assuming that I can quote you. I am a moderator at the sillydog.org site, and, lately, a number of questions came up about Netscape Webmail.

Feel free. (Mark's reply).

As for the second part there is not a darned thing that we can do about it.
I always felt that allowing to set up Netscape Webmail in the client was counterproductive to AOL. But, the entire thing has been so unreliable that nothing may be an improvement, since the website has been working poorly.
I just hope that AOL does not start bringing in ads with Netscape Webmail, in the client, like they do in theirs( and, people pay for it!). Which remind me that I have to get into AOL about their flash ads in their newsgroups.
