Netscape webmail

Postby jparsons » Sun 15 Dec, 2002 4:33 pm

When I installed Netscape 7 Streamline on my computer, I did not install the AOL Instant Messenger, since I already had it and I wanted to save space. I also didn't care about using Netscape webmail. I regret that decision. Does anyone have any idea how I can install the AOL Instant Messenger that comes with NS7 without having to uninstall and then reinstall?

You can just install over it.
However, you might want to wait another 1 or 2 days, NS7.01 Streamline will be released, if no bugs are being reported.
I included the issue with AIM (NIM) that came with Netscape, you might want to take a look.

You can go to ftp.netscape.com and find the 7.01 XPI's and install "MAIL.XPI" and "NIM.XPI", and you will have the Mail and IM Capabilites.

ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.01/windows/win32/bfkprv/nim.xpi
ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.01/windows/win32/bfkprv/mail.xpi

Those are the two files you need to install to get these features back into Netscape.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try.

I would advise you not to use the XPI files that Mandrake linked to. This is
because the version of Netscape you have is 7.0, but the XPI files in the
above links are for Netscape 7.01, so installing them into 7.0 is likely
to cause you problems. The best thing to do is to upgrade to 7.01.

If you don't want to download the full 30+Mb package from Netscape,
you might want to try the DJGM-i Distros "Pigeon" Edition of NS7.01
from the Club Netscape website. It weighs in at just 20.4MB, and
includes the latest version of the NS Mail and News client with
combined AIM/ICQ messaging client, most up to date revision
of the Sun Java 2 plugin, v1.4.1_01. The official Netscape 7.01
only has Sun Java 2 v1.4.0_01 bundled with it.

If you'd like to "upgrade" you can use the DJGM-i Distro Auto Install
system. This uses the XPI installation mechanism of current Gecko
based browsers, and will fire up the setup wizard as soon as the
download is complete.

Of course, if you prefer, you could always wait for the Streamline
version of Netscape 7.01 which is to be released on this site soon.

The choice is yours . . .

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Jim, a word of caution. I have been able to add Webmail in a couple of cases, and I hardly ever use it, or receive mail there, but something seems to get "worn out". Webmail tends to do whatever was the norm in 6.x. It has the tendency to lock up when exiting mail.
