Netscape won't install?

I tried installing Netscape on my computer but the installer never installed the program. I presently have firefox installed as my default web browser. The version of netscape I tried installing was version 4.79.

Also, downloading version 3.04 produced this error message:

"550 failed to change directory"

You might need to have adminstrator privilege to install Netscape Communicator.

I would suggest you try Netscape 4.80

Did you try to download Netscape 3.04 from Netscape Browser Archive?

Versions 4.x and 3.x of Netscape are totally obsolete as internet browsers. You're better off sticking with Firefox.

Dunric has Firefox. There are people who need or wish to use Netscape 4.x or 3.x for certain reasons.

I noticed already that Dunric is using Firefox. That's why I said it's better to stick with that, rather than bothering
with such antiquated browsers that are several years obsolete, and that effectively no-one uses anymore.

Another reason not to use old browsers, is security. They're likely to be absolutely riddled with security holes.
These holes will never be fixed, since the vendors (in this case Netscape/AOL) no longer support them.

When a user needs some help on older version of Netscape? All your response is to tell the user not to use the latest?

This section the section we provide support for old version of Netscape. Not that we encourage using old version, there's no need to p*ss off users in this section.

Perhaps I shall respond something similar when next time you mention your early model of iMac (G3) or PowerMac G3.

The reason I want to download Netscape 4.79 is because it comes with an HTML editor that is easier to use than Nvu and doesn't use cryptic "style" commands in the HTML (just plain ol'
HTML).

Is there a way to get the Netscape Composer application as a separate piece?

Now you know, as I've said, that if I could afford newer Macs, I would buy one with little or no hesitation whatsoever.
While I don't have the funds available for new computers, I'll be sticking with my G3's for the forseeable future.

Let's not turn this thread into another Mac related discussion, we have plenty of other threads for that.


Thing is, most internet browsers are free products. There is very little reason (if any) to use browsers that are so old.

The only reason I'd download and older versions of Netscape these days, would perhaps be for nostalgic reasons,
to look back on the days when Netscape was still the most popular web browser, with the highest market share.
And even then, they'd be installed insde virtual machines within Virtual PC, rather than installed natively.

And as much as I used to be a a big fan of Netscape, back when I ran my Club Netscape website, and offered up
the DJGM-i Distros of Netscape 7.x, you know these days I'm not keen on the current generation of Netscape
branded browser offerings. If AOL ever see sense (unlikely I know) and bring back the Netscape branded
internet suites (which would most likely be based upon SeaMonkey) I would more than likely, relaunch
the Club Netscape website, and to some extent, resume production of my custom Netscape distros.

Meanwhile, as for downloading/installing versions of Netscape from the 4.x and 3.x series and earlier, maybe it'd
be a good idea for us here at SillyDog701, to point certain issues out in the form of a general disclaimer, just as
we did back when Netscape 6 was full of bugs. As this section of these forums, is geared towards being one
of the few remaining places to turn to with regards to old Netscape, we need to remind users, that they
are now completely obsolete, no longer supported by Netscape, and should ideally not be used
and/or relied upon as a primary tool for everyday general internet browsing.

The only standalone webpage editing tool akin to the old Netscape/Mozilla Composer, is Nvu. I wouldn't really
recommend using the Composer from Netscape 4.x anyway, as it outputs old style, proprietary HTML code,
made to work best in the Netscape browser suites it came with. Modern web browsers such as Firefox
and Opera may not display your pages as intended. And as it outputs code specific to Netscape 4.x,
it might look a completely shambolic mess when viewed with Internet Explorer!

As for the "style" commands, I know what you mean. This is a default feature of Nvu that I don't really like,
in that it mixes CSS (Stylesheet) code with HTML, and the resulting page source can look a bit of a mess.


Thankfully, this "feature" can be turned off. Open Nvu, and go to - Tools - Preferences - General, and
uncheck the "Use CSS Styles . . . " checkbox. It's best to do this when you're not currently editing
a webpage in the Nvu editor itself. Better still, once you made this change in the Preferences,
restart Nvu. Then, when you next edit a page with it, you'll get regular HTML output.

BTW, you may be interested to know, that since Nvu hasn't been officially updated since June of last year,
there is an "unofficial bugfix release" called KompoZer available from kompozer.net. It's at v0.77 right
now, so it's technically a beta product. But since I've started using it in place of Nvu 1.0, it certainly
appears somewhat less buggy than it's official counterpart, and is built upon a much more recent
version of the Mozilla Gecko rendering engine used in Firefox, Nvu and SeaMonkey.

Netscape 7.2 is the last release of Netscape that has an HTML editor called Composer. It creates clean HTML code.
