Netscape7/Mozilla profile problem

Postby BC » Thu 10 Oct, 2002 2:49 pm

Apparently, Netscape 7 and Mozilla are a little too cosy. Each takes the changes to the other's profiles. How do I avoid this problem? We use both browsers...my girlfriend is just upgrading to Netscape 7 and I use Mozilla 1.2a and overnight beta versions and don't wish to switch.
I recall seeing something on this problem before but can't recall what the solution was. Thanks.

Just don't share profiles between the two.

I tried not to do that but when I installed Netscape 7 (the first time) it took the profiles available from Mozilla as well as netscape 4.79. I was quite surprised actually. I wound up having to uninstall both versions of Netscape and Mozilla before anything would settle down. Now, I'm tackling the Mozilla installation again....just getting the kevlar body armour on now...
Thanks for the advice.

Quoting from the Netscape 7.0 Release Notes:

Do not share a profile between Netscape and Mozilla builds. Doing this can lead to unpredictable results, some of which may include loss of Search settings and preferences and unchecked growth of the Bookmarks file (large enough to freeze your system). It is best to create a new profile for each or manually copy (and change the name) an existing profile.

Very easy to say but there doesn't seem to be a workable solution in this case. I had three seperate profiles (two for Netscape and 1 for Mozilla) and couldn't get them to stay apart. Even after I removed all three profiles and created one new profile for each program and each under a different name and created by the program it was designed to be used with. No bloody go. I finally gave up, uninstalled BOTH Netscape 7 and Mozilla 1.2a, stripped the registry of all references to either and re-installed Netscape 4.8 and Mozilla 1.2a. No more problems but I did lose all my saved password information in Mozilla. That isn't a major problem and was my own fault for not backing it up. Anyway, I won't be "upgrading" to Netscape 7, that's for darn sure. Nothing but trouble like 6.0 was. Well, not quite that bad but still a major pain in the butt.

Bernie,
remember that uninstalling a program does nothing to the Profile. I always has different named profiles, this is what is meant by not sharing them. Now, if you tell me that you have two different profiles, and the one from Netscape took those of Mozilla, and without your intervention, it is news to me. But, if you click on your one and only profile, and saw whatever was in Mozilla and 4.79, in NS7.0, is because you are using the Mozilla profile for for NS7.0. As for 4.79 stuff showing, it is done so that you do not have to convert files with different format, which are in 4.x vs. Mozilla and higher NS.

I know the uninstalling doesn't affect profiles. The uninstalling, along with the stripping of the registry took care of the problem. And yes Netscape 7 and Mozilla 1.2a were sharing profile data for profiles with entirely different names. There were eventually four different profiles in fact and I couldn't get either program to mind it's own business. The problem only appeared and disappeared with the "upgrade" to Netscape 7.0 and it's subsequent complete removal. This is the second time I've had this kind of experience with an "improved" version of Netscape. The last time was netscape 6.0 and what a total disaster that was and caused me all kinds of headaches trying to get my computer system running smoothly again. With that history, I don't have much tolerance for these kinds of problems with Netscape and the "improved" version has to prove itself very quickly or it's trashed. In this case, as with 6.0, it was trashed. I don't have the time or patience for software that is troublesome and requires babysitting and all kinds of tweaking just to get it to perform basic tasks.
Netscape, in my opinion, hasn't produced a decent and reliable browser since the 4.XX series. Every version since has been either rushed or as buggy as a Louisiana swamp.

We will not talk about 6.0, which was a hopeless mess, but your problem is new to me. I don't thnk that NS7 was rushed, having been in beta for a few months, and it does , definitely, need improvements, but it is not something to toss on account of an oddball event.
I have three different downloads of NS7, with their own Profile, and all of them mind their own business. I don't know if your problem may be due to the fact that you had installed 1.2a first. It would be impossible, for me, to reproduce your problem.

I guess you mean that you want Netscape7 and Mozilla to startup in their own profiles without having to deal with the profile manager? I've (finally) got things set up this way to keep my testing profile separate from my day to day profile. The solution seems to be to set up two profiles with the manager "Testing" & "Day2Day" and then edit the shortcuts used to start up NS or Moz to have a command line option of
-P Testing
and
-P Day2Day
respectively. This way the profile manager is bypassed and each browser has its own profile.

I concur with the previous opinions about how well Mozilla and Netscape 7 can co-exist as long as you do not share profiles. One matter that confused me about profiles is that BOTH profile managers will list ALL the available profiles, both Mozilla based and Netscape based. This makes it dangerous because you might inadvertently pick the wrong profile (Then you ARE sharing profiles).

It is easy to get around this danger by using the -P command line parameter which is explained in the posting above. In fact, I bypass the Profile manager in all my installations of Netscape 7 since I always have multiple profiles for one reason or another.

The third thing I'd like to point out is that Mozilla is not a finished product and should only be used by those who love a bit of adventure. I installed Mozilla 1.2.1 on my system and share some of its files with Netscape 7. I take this risk willingly. (Netscape 7, on the other hand, is a finished product and is the greatest thing since sliced bread. :) ) Those who are not adventurous should steer clear of Mozilla itself.

profman makes an excellent point. Mozilla is not for end users, it is definitely for developer's, or adventurers like ourselves! ;)

To add to that, Netscape 7 is a work in progress, and if you choose to experiment, then don't be alarmed if things go wrong occasionally. If you want stability, then use Communicator, as it is rock solid, both browser and Messenger. I think the majority of the Mozilla, and the new Netscape users are adventurous, and enjoy the challenge.

Believe me, I do understand your frustration, been there and done that! However, the three browsers can exist with no conflicts, if perseverance and patience are applied.

Cheers!
