New discovery

Postby jksteinhauer » Sun 08 Dec, 2002 11:37 pm

True to form, one of the things that intrigued me about Netscape right from the beginning was the discovering of all kinds of neat little downplayed tweaks. Having converted to broadband some time ago I of course noticed a difference in speed but I just found a nice little tweak that improves NS 7's abilties.
Under Preferences/HTTP Networking - enable Pipelining. Amazing difference in page rendering.

Do u mean Pipeline will render the page quicker?
Sometimes It is really quicker, sometimes not, depend on the whether the Proxy/Webserver support the multi-requests from client.

It may load the page more quickly, but rendering is unaffected and there are bugs. Also, on some older servers, it may actually slow things down.

So is this a good setting to use or no? I'm trying it now but I'm not sure if I see the differences yet.

I also wondered.. Do u have set this up any special way? Or do u just checkmark enable pipelining under http's direct connection and proxy connections.

Yes, just check it. I wouldn't think it would make a significant difference unless you were on broadband ...

My university has a big bandwidth connection to the internet, and checking these options have, so far, improved my load times. It will be worth seeing what happens in the future. I appreciate the posting of such potentially helpful information.

What is Pipeline?

Postby Antony » Mon 09 Dec, 2002 5:33 pm

It sounds interesting.
By the way, what is "pipeline"?

I have broadband here as well, and with Pipelining enabled, I am finding some web pages load in slower than with the option not enabled.

I have broadband and enabling the Pipeline seems to have speeded up the loading of some pages. However, on a site with streaming video, it seems to have slowed down. I don't know if the two are related or not.
