AOL seems to be pushing Netscape CDs a bit too far lately, even more than AOL CDs. I hope that 7.2 is available for download as well as on CD...

If AOL decides to send the CDs out for free as they do with the AOL CDs, maybe we can get a significantly larger non-IE crowd on the Internet.

Im 100% sure NS 7.2 will offer free download.
And if AOL push NS CD as hard as AOL CD, I should recieve it in my mail box for free every 2 weeks, lol. It will be fantastic if it can be got from Bestbuy.

Getting CDs every two weeks could be a good thing. It would probably prompt AOL to update NS more often. And if enough people start using it, we might see Netscape development reach the levels that it used to have!

It could happen!
Better yet, they could put CompuServe on the AOL CDs, and people that want something more secure could use that instead. Alhough, I'm not exactly sure that AOL accounts are compatible with CS, does anyone know if they are?

Compuserve is pretty much AOL for non-America. Over here, you get free Compuserve cds with magazines and stuff instead of AOL cds. I see them much less these days though and also haven't come across one with the new Gecko based version, but I'm pretty sure they exist.

Z_God: I thought AOL's Gecko-based version was CompuServe. AOL wouldn't be able to incorporate Gecko into AOL legally, because they have a signed contract with Microsoft to use MSHTML. The only reason they do it for MacOS X is because there is no further work on IE for Mac.

I was under the impression that while AOL had entered a contract permitting them to use the MSHTML/Internet Explorer code, they were not obligated to do so.

Some more information on the presence or absence of Gecko in AOL products can be found in this thread.

It is good that Netscape is being promoted on CD-ROM again. But what affect will it have? AOL do have the capacity to promote and distribute these CDs on a large scale, but will they?

Compuserve is just the brand for the provider in for non-America. It would be pretty weird to have a provider called America Online in Europe for example. The AOL name is only used in America, for the rest of the world, they're Compuserve.
The current client offered to Compuserve users is already using Gecko, while earlier clients would embed IE. I've never used Compuserve though, so I don't know about the details of these clients.
For AOL users, I believe only an older beta version uses Gecko for browsing.
The current mailclient, AOL Communicator, does use Gecko, while their current browser embeds IE.

What you guys in America had with enormous amounts of free AOL cds, we had that with Compuserve cds. I could scan some of them if you really want.

AOL is the name they use in canada. and yes the CD was AOL8.0Plus
