I plan to install FF 4 AND also keep my current 3.6.x install for the time being.

When I tried one of the Betas, I was unable to import my FF 3.6 bookmarks into 4.x.

Does anyone know how to do that without installing over the top of 3.6?

I am using the portable apps version for 3.6 & will likely do the same for 4.

When you uninstall 3.6 (and I would definitely do that), do not uninstall the profile (it will ask you during the uninstall whether or not you want to do this. Then install FF 4 and it will pick up your old profile complete with extensions, themes, history and bookmarks.

For the time being I want to keep both versions installed until I'm convinced there are no serious bugs or shortcomings in 4.x. Having used FF since it was launched, I have found that to be a prudent choice in the past!

The transition from 3.6.x to 4.0 seems to have gone pretty smoothly here. I got the update from Firefox's auto-update mechanism and after checking for any incompatible extensions (it found one and updated it automatically), Firefox 4.0 is running well. I plan on using Firefox 4 as my main browser for a while just to see how the transition goes; it's quite a jump from Firefox 3.x/Gecko 1.9.x.

As a sidenote, I was able to import my bookmarks from SeaMonkey (as an HTML file) with no problems whatsoever.

For the bookmarks, just export them to a file on the desktop. Then, after the install of FF4, import from that desktop file.

I installed 4.0 final, but wanted to keep 3.6.15 as my default, as 4.0, still, lacks a number of things. 4.0 proved to be a tough customer. As usual, it tried to become default, and tried to install in a folder occupied by 3.6.x. I am used to these antics, and I created a new folder, and did a custom installation. In spite of these precautions, 4.0 knocked out the 3.6.x shortcut, maybe because I has left the name Mozilla Firefox. The recovery was easy, as 4.0 had not touched the 3.6.x folder. So, I renamed the 4.0 shortcut, had to go to the Program Files|Mozilla Firefox folder, and send the shortcut to the Desktop. Then, I had to add the -p to the Target line, of each of the two shortcuts, and after opening the program, and getting the Profile Manager, select the desired Profile, for each of the two version, and finally, after all this is done, modify, again, the Target line, with the name of each profile.
Although, I knew how to do it, why was this necessary? Do they really think that everyone should abandon ship, right away? Clowns!

One more thing. Talking about clowns. After I posted my message, and Sillydog.org came back, it occupied the entire page. No toolbars nor anything. If I moused over on top, The address bar, and the tabs came into view. I tried to Close, and it did not in a timely manner. Where are the other toolbars, and especially, the File/View, etc?
How am I supposed to see the bookmark, etc.? I hope that it is, only, my problem, because I am done this thing.

Note: Firefox4.0 RC@ is gone from the Add/Remove, but its folder exists. I got another shortcut from it, and I am using it, with the same profile used for 4.0 final. It opened, momentarily, with the the previous Profile settings, but, then all toolbars disappeared. This suggests some corruption in the profile. 4.0 RC2 was working fine with the same profile, as all its beta predecessors did.

A couple more updates. 1.When I clicked on a link in an email, the FF 4.0 profile came up. I went back to bring up the profile manager in 3.6.x, and it had shifted the profile to that of 4.0. I adjusted that, and when checked 4.0, the Profile Manager showed that the do not ask stayed with the profile for 3.6.x. Up until now, I could have links opening in the Profile checked, but it does not seem possible, any longer.
2. There was no sign of a Prefbar, in 4.0, but it showed up with the chosen links, when I reinstalled it.
Is it not fun? This may be only my problem, for whatever reason, but I would like to know if anyone who has tried to keep both versions, and kept 3.6.x as default, has had any problem.

I decided to copy my 3.6 profile & then install 4.0 over the top of one of them.

Very few issues so far; mainly the look: I've been using "Classic Compact", & while their is a beta for 4.0 which works fine at this point it still has a significantly different appearance then 3.6. I want my exact 3.6 theme.

The first start up also literally took over 5 minutes with a/v turned off; but restarts have been fast.

I was aware of the feature, but I thought, incorrectly, that it was enough to Import the bookmarks.html from from its location in the Profile. It does not work. It seems necessary to do a 2-step operation. Go to Profile 1, and Export. Then, go to Profile 2, and Import. I had not try it, but it must be that way.

My experience with FF 4.0 portable was different from the normal type, probably, because I have only one FF portable, at a time. With FF portable, it is necessary to download the entire program, and, everything will be done "on top". No question was asked, and FF4.0 placed the Tabs on top, and hid the top row, as well as what they call addon row, i.e. whatever is on the bottom, but it was easy to get into the old gear. A button on the upper left allows to control things. Why was it not in the normal version, and I has to fumble around to see the stuff in the Menu Bar (File,Edit, View, etc.) beats me. With 4.0, it seems to be a new experience, and annoyance.
As for the Theme, it is a different story. And the addons are even more confusing. It said that five of them were not compatible. Two of them turned out to be updatable, one (the Prefbar) was not, but showed up anyway, and two are nowhere to be seen. Why is the program messing with the Addons, and requires manual intervention when updates exist is beyond comprehension. Who are these developers?

Gentlemen, millions upon millions are downloading FF4. I absolutely love it. Why always so negative? This browser is an awesome piece of work. Why not concentrate on the positive? It's lightening fast. The default is beautiful. I love the minimalist tool bar. I love the way it handles tabs. It's just a winner all the way.

It's lightening fast. The default is beautiful. I love the minimalist tool bar. I love the way it handles tabs. It's just a winner all the way.

I have concentrated on the negatives, only because nothing like I reported happened in the betas and RCs.
And, the final 4.0, in my opinion, is not as fast, as the RCs.
I like to see my Menu Bar, and in the regular version, I had to go fishing for it, and, stumbled on bringing back, and the Status Bar, or as they call it now Addon something or other, gets emptied.
Fortunately, I figured out ways to bring everything back. I may change if I feel like it, since there are ways. But I don't like in being shocked into new ways, unless there is an explanation.

An additional comment. I thought, and I may have been mistaken that it was necessary to select "do not ask at startup", when the profile was chosen for the particular version. I found out that when I opened the Profile Manager for 3.6.16, and, then for 4.0, making the appropriate choice, it did not apply to the Profile used by that version, when I clicked on a link. Invariably, if the choice was made for 3.6.16, first, and then for 4.0, going back to 3.6.16, showed that the choice was change. That's why 3.6.16 opened with a 4.0 Theme. It took me a while to understand, but now I select only the profile used for 3.6.16, and, only later I modify the Target line for each version, to indicate which profile is used. This way, the line opens with the desired Profile, and each version opens with its profile.
what I am saying may be unclear, unless both versions are installed.
