New Firefox version

Postby mlj38 » Wed 06 Oct, 2004 10:24 am

I have used Firefox for awhile and really like it - BUT - installed the new version yesterday and now get the message"the connection was refused when attempting to contact mozilla.org". Have tried everything my novice brain can think of - so now I'm asking for help. Have a cable modem connection and am running windows xp. Thanks for any suggestions. I hate having to use I.E.

Have you tried any other websites? You said that you tried everything. Like what?I just checked the website and it working fine. There is an outside chance that either cookies are not set properly, or that the site was down.
I, also, have a cable connection and WinXP.

new firefox version

Postby mlj38 » Wed 06 Oct, 2004 3:31 pm

I have removed and downloaded firefox 3 times and continue to get the message listed in my original posting. I can access the mozilla websites through IE though. I am quickly learning that I do not know as much as I thought I did!! Where do I go to check/adjust my cookie settings? Thank you for all your suggestions.

I can't think of one case when removal and reinstallation of a program helped and still a lot of people are doing it. It may backfire. In fact, in another thread, Alice said that the two most dangerous things to do are:
1.Install a program
2. Uninstall the program

In firefox, your settings are in Tools|Privacy|Cookies
Believe me, it is fun to learn how to use another program. Don't expect that everything will handed to you on a plate. But, one can use Firefox without many problems.
But, still you have not told me if you tried any other website. Sometimes, one has problems accessing one website, and not others. Just delete the url, and enter another one

Close... but no cigar ;)

You know what they say about the major causes of personal computer problems..... ;)
1. Installing programs
2. UNinstalling programs

Back to the subject at hand...
I also would like to know if the "connection refused" message is ONLY at mozilla.org sites, and only using Firefox.... or if other sites such as google.com or yahoo.com also give the message in Firefox but are reachable using Internet Explorer.

I will look at my cookie settings as you suggest. I get the connection refused message on every website I try to access, not just mozilla/firefox. Spoke on the phone with my cable modem co. (linksys) and they seem to think an adjustment needs to be made with the mozilla and not with their product. I really appreciate all the advice - and you are right it is fun to learn more and try new programs! Thanks Ü

How are you connecting Mozilla? You should use Direct connection to the Internet, in Advanced|Proxy. I heard that Proxies can caused problems.
And, I got this
It may be of some use, although it looks extreme. Do you use a Firewall?
And, is this just a cable modem or a router?
I was using a Lynksys router, and it was ok, but I always used a Motorola modem.
Good luck.

In Firefox, your proxy settings are in Tools / Options then under General tab click Connection Settings. If you have no proxy, make sure you have selected "Direct connection to the Internet". If you need to use a proxy, make sure it's entered correctly.

If you have a firewall such as Zone Alarm or Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall then that's the likely culprit. More here:

Post back with the name of your Firewall program if you need more help.
