Apple has introduced the long-awaited and much-rumoured iPad mini, a 7.9-inch device the company will sell starting at US$329. The device is 7.2mm thin and weighs 308 grams (0.68 pounds), and features the same 1024 x 768 resolution as the original iPad and iPad 2. At same resolution, iPad mini has much higher density (163 ppi) than the iPad and iPad 2 (132 ppi).

The new fourth generation iPad features the amazing 9.7-inch Retina display and includes a new Apple-designed A6X chip that delivers up to twice the CPU performance and up to twice the graphics performance of the A5X chip, all while delivering an incredible 10 hours of battery life in the same thin and light iPad design. Other new features include a FaceTime HD camera, twice the Wi-Fi performance when compared to previous iPad models and support for additional LTE carriers worldwide. And the new Lightning port.

Cameras
iPad mini sports two cameras, a front-facing FaceTime HD camera designed for video chats and the all-important self-portrait, and a 5 megapixel rear iSight camera for taking photos and videos. The iSight camera can shoot at full 1080p HD, same as the 4th generation iPad with Retina Display (which was also introduced during the event).

Wi-Fi
Apple also announced that the iPad mini features dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi support, which means that the device can support speeds up to 150 Mbps on Wi-Fi connections.

Pricing & Availability
iPad mini with Wi-Fi models will be available in black & slate or white & silver on Friday, November 2, and customers can pre-order it starting on Friday, October 26th. Pricing is as follows:
16GB: $329 (USD) A$369 (incl GST)
32GB: $429 A$479 (incl GST)
64GB: $529 A$589 (incl GST)

Wi-Fi + Cellular models are priced at $130 more, iPad mini with Wi-Fi + Cellular and fourth generation iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular will start shipping a couple of weeks after the Wi-Fi models:

16GB: $459 A$509 (incl GST)
32GB: $559 A$619 (incl GST)
64GB: $659 A$729 (incl GST)

The fourth generation iPad with Wi-Fi models will also be available on Friday, November 2, in black or white for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) A$539 (incl GST) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) A$649 (incl GST) for the 32GB model and $699 (US) A$759 (incl GST) for the 64GB model

Fourth generation iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular will be offered for a suggested retail price of $629 (US) A$679 (incl GST) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) A$789 (incl GST) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) A$899 (incl GST) for the 64GB model.

It starts at £269 here in the UK. Now, had it been around £50-60 less than that, and had a 16:9 widescreen
display rather than 4:3, Apple would probably be on a winner with the new iPad mini. But no, they lumber
it with an obsolete aspect ratio, and as is typical for Apple, a price tag that is higher than it should be.

A shame really ... as it could've been some good competition for the Google Nexus 7 tablet.

On the day of the announcement, a friend of mine called me and said that $369 for iPad mini is damn cheap (which I agree). She then asked me if she could walk in to Apple Store and pick one up on 2nd November.
I told her, unless she ordered one online, on 2nd November, she had to queue, unlikely she can just walk in and get one.

For the record, Antony is poor. Antony did not order an iPad mini or 4th generation iPad for 2nd November delivery. Antony's schedule for 2nd November is also packed, he is not queuing outside Apple Store for one.
