new version of seamonkey

Postby LARRYB » Thu 24 Feb, 2011 2:07 pm

I noticed that a new version of Sea Monkey 2.x is out. I still have not upgraded from V 1.1.18. Evertime I try a install it dosent find my email folders and I loose all email. After A slight panic attack, I remember to uninstall the new version and reinstall the old version to get all my files back.

Does this new version work better :?

Larry,
follow the directions given by Dave, and you should be fine. May be you did not notice the offer to import the profile. In any event, you will lose the profile information of v.1.x, precisely because the profiles are located in different folders. I had both 1.x and 2.x installed, for sake of comparison, but in different folders. If you let the installation of the program proceed without changing the location, it will go in the default spot, which is: "C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey", in both cases. So, you have no more v.1.1.8, but a 2.0.11 which cannot find the old profile. I continue using 1.x and 2.x, for several months, until I uninstalled 1.x, for good.
The browser part of SM2.x is more similar to FF, but SM will be about the same as before. Better, because it has plugged security vulnerabilities, but not obviously different.

Thanks for the link. As in the past, trying to upgrade from V1.1.18 I always ran into a snag.

Is it better to uninstall V`1.1.18 before installing V2.x?

If it goes south, can I uninstall V2.x and reinstall V1.1.18 and still have my profile and email files intact?

You, probably, did not read my previous comment, where I explained why you have been having problems, as the programs go into the same folders, but the profiles are different.
Just for the record SM1.1.19 was the last version of the 1.x group, having come out on March 16, 2010, while SM 2.0 came out on Oct.27,2009. 1.1.18 is outdated, anyway, and 1.1.19 is end-of-life.

Are you saying that the SeaMonkey 1.x and SeaMonkey 2.x programs are installed into the same location? If you are, that is not so! The SeaMonkey 1.x program files are located here:

C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe

and the SeaMonkey 2.x program files are located here:

C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe

Their respective profiles are installed here (in Win XP):

SeaMonkey 1.x:

C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\<Your Windows Username>\Mozilla\Profiles\default\xxxxxxxx.slt

and SeaMonkey 2.x:

C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\<Your Windows Username>\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.defaault

Where 'xxxxxxxx' is a random 8-character string.

Installing SeaMonkey 2.x into its default locations does not affect the SeaMonkey 1.x profile in any way.

Regards,

Dave.

I think that needs a little clarification! Unless you import your profile into SeaMonkey 2.x, it will not use it and you will not have all your data from SeaMonkey 1.x in SeaMonkey 2.x. Howevewr, your SeaMonkey 1.x profile will not have been affected by installing SeaMonkey 2.x. it will still be on your computer! The only caveat is that you shouldn't normally run both SeaMonkey 1 and 2 simultaneously!

Dave.

WOW, I started something

As in the past I may have overlooked the import profile issue. My experience with SM has been good with updates not having issue. It was just a matter of click and wit for it to be done by itself.

In all cases I was able to unstall the newer versions and reinstall the older one and all my data was back.

I will down load and install SM 2.X tomorrow and watch carefully for the import pop up.

Thanks for your help.

Just cant get my head around this :?

I am not a dummy and can read and follow directions that are list above but I'll be darn if I can get the profile wizard to come up.

I enter the following command on the RUN mode "C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe" -P "new profile" -migration

after that it just installs like every time before and I dont have any option to select what I want to import or portal over.

I have read the info in the "Profile migration - SeaMonkey" link but was looking for a download (the manage program) could not find any downloadable programs on any of those links.

I then went back and un installed SM 2.x and re installed V1,1,18 and now here I am back up and running with all info.

I did notice that my bookmarks did appear in V2.x but a email was lost. I fully understand the they are located in 2 different folders but cant seem to get the wizard to ask me the quest on what to install.

Do I need to download a migration program, and if so where is it?

Did some more research on my issue. Found a BUG 525038 that is exactly what I and others have and are experiencing. I read all the way through and it seems to be no fix.

Maybe someone can figure this out...

Found this in the bug files. After searching my Mozilla files I could not locate the REGISTRY.DAT file ( I did a search of my program files).

Same problem with SM 2.0.2:

The problem seams if registry.dat points to a non existing profile. Which can
happen on following:

- User Name change (and so change of %APPDATA% directory)
- Operation system change (and so change of %APPDATA% directory)

Fixing the problem (if you have only ONE default profile):

- rename your registry.dat file
- start old SM => a new registry.dat is created
- Start SM 2.0 with "-migration" => Migration dialog should start up.

Now I think I could just create a file called registry.dat, but it does not tell me what folder to put it in.

I have reinstalled SM V1.1.18 several time and still no file.

What to do

Hello Larry,

LARRYB wrote:I have reinstalled SM V1.1.18 several time and still no file.

I think that your problem is probably because you have previously tried to install SeaMonkey 2.x, when you did so, it created a new profile for SeaMonkey 2.x. Later attempts to install SM 2.x would not, therefore, launch the import wizard because of that profile. What you need to do is delete that profile and then try installing SM 2.x again. To do that, locate the new SM 2.x profile, which should be here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

Where 'xxxxxxxx' is a random 8-character string.

With all SeaMonkey applications closed, in particular, SM 1.x 'Quick Launch', delete the folder SeaMonkey and all its sub-folders and files.

Then re-install SM 2.x and see if you get the migration wizard and all your data imported into SM 2.x.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Dave.

Ok, let me see if I got this right.....

At present time I have removed SM 2 from my hard drive. You want me to reinstall SM2, then look for the below files:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

Where 'xxxxxxxx' is a random 8-character string.

Delete the seamonkey folder (or rename?)

uninstall SM 1.1.18

Then reinstall SM2 again.....

Sound right?

FYI, when I did last install of SM2, I noticed that about 20 email from several months ago appeared in my inbox as "read". Also my bookmarks were transfered over. So it appears that some kind of profiles were transfered without the profile wizard coming up.

C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

Is the profile folder which Dave referred to. You want to remove, first, it before reinstalling SM2 because its presence is preventing the launching of the Migration Assistant.
Then, uninstall SM1.1.18, the program, in Program Files and delete any files/folder which were not removed. You don't have to remove its profile folder. Then reinstall SM2, and you should be asked if you want to use the Migration Assistant.
If you reinstall SM2 first, you will be back to square one.

NO! You must delete the SM 2.x profile before you reinstall SM 2.x.

Delete the seamonkey folder (or rename?)

Only delete (or rename) the SM 2.x profile folder SeaMonkey.

uninstall SM 1.1.18

It isn't essential to uninstall SM 1.x (program files only, do NOT remove the SM 1.x profile) before installing SM 2.x, though you may do so, if you so wish.

Then reinstall SM2 again.....

Only reinstall SM 2.x after deleting the SM 2.x profile.

FYI, when I did last install of SM2, I noticed that about 20 email from several months ago appeared in my inbox as "read".

Was that your SM 2.x Inbox? If so, were those emails still in SM 1.x? If they were, you can continue as directed, otherwise, copy them to a safe location first!

Also my bookmarks were transfered over.

The same applies to your bookmarks as applies to the email that appeared in your Inbox.

So it appears that some kind of profiles were transfered without the profile wizard coming up.

That seems very unlikely, perhaps the wizard did come up and you accepted the invitation to import your data without realising it? The wizard normally appears the first time you run SM 2.x after installation.

Regards,

Dave.
