New Vivaldi browser

There's a new browser aiming to win the hearts and minds of power users. Called Vivaldi, the Chromium-based browser comes from a team led by Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder and former CEO of Opera Software. Vivaldi is available now as a technical preview for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

The overall look of Vivaldi is a mix of a classic browser UI and the more sparse, modern interpretations in browsers like Chrome and Microsoft's upcoming Spartan. In the upper left corner, you have a small menu button; below that the address bar with home, back, forward and refresh buttons to its left. There is also a left sidebar for quick access to browser features such as bookmarks, contacts, downloads, and notes. At the very bottom of the sidebar is a settings icon for quick access to your browser's preferences.

There is also a search box to the right of the address bar that is set to Google by default and doesn't appear to be changeable at the moment.

The story behind the story: Vivaldi appears to be ...

Good to see a new contender entering the browser market.

I hope Vivaldi can provide something different, and lasting.

Does anyone have a screenshot I can use?

Vivaldi seems to be fast. I like the clean interface.

I found it sluggish at this point. I'll likely take another look a few updates down the road. Here's my thought. While I welcome innovation and competition, I think it's too late for an alternate browser like Vivaldi. The world uses IE, FF, Chrome and Safari and to a very limited extent, Seamonkey, Opera and Maxthon. With MS preparing Spartan you can bet that a good number of dissatisfied FF and Chrome users will abandon ship. Vivaldi has what place??? a home for disaffected Opera Presto users? Ha! Their number is so small as to make them completely irrelevant. I see this as Von Tetzner's stab at getting even with Opera for dumping him. He was done anyway and the company needed more uses and more income. Why people insist upon clinging to the past with old suite models is beyond me. This isn't the 1990's. Geeze... that was 15 years ago and we've moved on. Even an old guy like me can adapt to a new-type of browser like Chrome so what really is the point?

Good point.

However, I hope it survives.
