News - Novell frees SUSE Linux.

Postby DJGM » Wed 03 Aug, 2005 9:43 pm

Novell is to relaunching SUSE Linux Professional as a completely free product, and rebrand it as OpenSUSE.
This is rather similar to RedHat's decision to relaunch their own consumer level Linux distro as Fedora Core.

Novell has also launched a new website called OpenSUSE.org to reflect this change of direction for the
popular (but no longer commercial, it seems) Linux distro company they acquired over 18 months ago.

More details at - NewsForge - Distrowatch - eWeek - ZDNET . . .

I thought there was always a free version of SuSE Linux.

DJGM,
Opensuse.org is a non-working link.

SuSE Linux has always been a pay-for Linux distrobution. They've released the downloadable versions a few months after the boxed version has been out.

There was a full website there when I first visited it yesterday. Looks like they either took
it down temporarily, or it wasn't supposed to have been publicly available to visit just yet.

Eitherway, the site is now working. The link should now take you to a secure that displays
a Novell account login page. I can't remember if I have a Novell account or not though.

Maybe I did, to be able to download the Novell Linux Desktop 9 distro, earlier this year.

Here is the site I get redirected to. If it still does not work, try clearing your browser's cache.

That's exactly the same thing I was about to suggest, but you beat me to it!

Kinda makes this screengrab slightly redundant now . . .

The OpenSUSE.org website has been officially opened. SUSE Linux can be downloaded from
the site, as can SUSE Linux 10.0 Beta 1. Click the screengrab below to visit the website . . .

Unlike the Fedora Core Linux project from RedHat, SUSE Linux will still be made available to
buy in retail boxset form, as well as the free downloads from the OpenSUSE.org website.

Will Novell continue to sell consumer-oriented SUSE Linux in retail shops?

Yes. One of the objectives of the openSUSE project is to make SUSE Linux easily
available to anyone. Although many SUSE Linux users may download the software
rom the project web site or from mirrored sites around the world, other SUSE Linux
users will prefer to have a physical copy of the product.

Working with Novell, the openSUSE project will continue to create a fully packaged
retail edition of the distribution that will be available in retail shops and online stores
worldwide. The retail edition includes installable media, printed manuals and several
additional commercial software programs as well as limited technical support.
The availability of a retail edition with support options sets SUSE Linux
apart from any other community-based Linux distribution.

IMHO, this is great news. Not only will the technically minded users, and those that
want to "jump straight in" be able to obtain SUSE Linux distros by free downloads,
those new to Linux will be able to get a fully supported retail edition, complete
with the usual generous helping of printed documentation and user guides.
