Nintendo has unveiled its new console and controller - Wii U - live on stage during the company's E3 press conference. Wii U's controller features a large 6.2 inch touchscreen onto which games can be projected.

The new controller also features motion control, a camera-pointer hybrid, and the ability to have elements of a game projected onto the floor, such as your ball's lie in a golf game. Existing Wii peripherals will wirelessly connect with the new controller, including the popular Wii Fit Balance Board.

The new controller can also be used as a web browser and even a magnifying device for on-screen web pages.

Apparently, the Wii U won't be supporting standard DVD or Blu-Ray Discs, opting instead for a new
and proprietary optical disc format exclusive to the new console, with the discs only 12cm wide.

I wonder which of the console makers would be the first to ditch optical discs altogether?

Something tells me it will be Sony, as they have already expressed interest in disc less with their PSP.

As far as I'm concerned, the day consoles go discless is the day they'll effectively eliminate the used games market, and can yank games from being playable on the console any time they want. I occasionally paid for new games by selling my old ones to EB (now GameStop), a practice which I'd assume, along with the brick-and-mortar store that I sold them at, would fade away as well.

As a side note, I'm glad Nintendo didn't make a discless move, as I've bought nearly all of my Nintendo-made games on launch day (i.e. new).

Why would you be concerned so much about used game market?

You missed out the great benefit of "instant gratification" of getting the game you want at your comfort couch without the hassle of leaving the house.

I never bought any games on launch day.

It's not really "instant gratification"; you'd still have to wait for quite a bit of game data to download.

Let's say a game is about the size of a DVD (5GB), which is actually a very conservative estimate as many newer console games are now much larger, and fit on dual-layer discs or even Blu-ray discs. The average Internet connection speed in the U.S. is 5.1Mbps (source). 5GB would take about 138 minutes to download over such a connection. By contrast, according to Google Maps, it would be faster for me to drive there and back (22 minutes), take a bus followed by another bus, layover included (52 minutes), or even walk six miles there and back (128 minutes).

My concern for the used game market is that it's pretty much the only source for affordable games, with new ones retailing for $60 or more nowadays.

There are many other benefits, such as removing the need of getting out of the house in the bad weather day, or possibility of the shop not having enough stocks, and the opening hours.

The ability of getting the at any time of the day is very important to today's modern geeks!

Don't worry, you don't have to buy used games. You can afford new games.

I don't think game discs are going away any time soon. You can order online as well, from the traditional game retailers like EB or GAME, or from sites like Amazon.

In Australia, I use, and highly recommend, Dungeon Crawl. Their games cost a fraction of those from EB etc. (they import from Europe and elsewhere). This is a great advantage since games cost anywhere up to $120 AUD here. (i.e. more than double US prices)

Thank you for the website. I visited their store when I was in Melbourne, not many selections I have to say.

Games, and almost everything else, is much more expensive than in the United States of America. How lucky Americans are.
